Things are rolling along smoothly on the banks of the Duck.. BUT we're gonna need a few more work days out at the site before this grand event. Please stay posted for these work day announcements. I'd imagine that anyone that makes it out to Hohenwald to help us with pre-event setup would be properly compensated the weekend of the engagement. I'm not promising anything by the way!

Don't forget to study up on your impressions and the accounts of the hard fighting Tennesseeans (24th TN C.S. & 2nd TN U.S.) you'll portray on both sides of the conflict. Let's do it up right! I need to hear this most of all.

Contact one of us local folks if you have a weekend that you'd be able to make it out and we'll see what transpires. ALSO.. if you may be considering coming extra early to the event site and would like to help us set up.. we'd like to know if that's your intention. (Thanks Brian Mc.)

            Gents,
For the Duck river event I will offer a scarve for $15 . These will be of dark blue heavy kersey . They look like the end of a blanket that has been cut off. They are very warm. I had on down at the McAllister event and was happy with it. So I am selling them. I will be giving $5 back to Eli for every one I sell for the preservation effort. I have to cut these and I will need to know how many so please PM me if you want one.
I will also have a few jackets and CS kepis and a few haversacks on hand .I will also bring some other items like pocket knives and other haversack stuffers. If there is a item you are looking for PM me and I may have it or might be able to make it for you in time for the event.

Here is a passage about the condition of the Confederates along the Cumberland River close to the same time of year that this event is meant to portray. This passage comes from the work, Campaigns of Wheeler and His Cavalry, 1862 - 1865, p. 65:

"Operations Of The Rebels On The Cumberland River.
“Nashville, Saturday, Jan. 17, 1863 – The Confederate army is reported in a pitiable condition, their wounded – many of whom were removed by them – dying daily by scores for want of medicine and proper food. The conscripts, particularly those from Tennessee, are dissatisfied and are daily deserting, and the whole army is destitute of tents, shoes and comfortable clothing. The contrast between our troops and these ragged conscripts, who are daily coming here, is great indeed – scarcely any of the latter having anything heavier than a cotton jacket to protect them from the weather. Overcoats are ‘played out’ in the Confederacy, as a soldier remarked to me the other day.
“Nothwithstanding the ill-fed and poorly clothed condition of the rebels, it is an undoubted fact that they display an amount of daring and energy not approached by our soldiers.”

The bold type is my doing and emphasis.

It's always warm in my soul... however it does ice over occasionally around my heart...

I know all the boys I have talked to are anxious for this event no matter what the temps may or may not get up to!

Anyone going through South-Western Indiana on Hwy 41 is more than welcome to meet up with me... I got one open seat, and will be heading down sometime on Friday.

Mitch, bring the orange shirt and maybe we can reenact the infamous "Riding of the Mitch." Yes, Jack Cox took photographs! I saw one recently, too.

Meanwhile, if someone wanted to slap down something akin to a site street address, rural route & box, or "turn left at big tree where the barbershop used to be," then it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a highly secret event site Chawls... If you are coming from the north take a right at Franklin, and you will hit it!

As for the Orange or "Rust" shirt, it is somewhere up in Nebraska on the back of one lucky fellow... I may call in a favor and get it back.

                            Gentlemen,

I thought some information was in order for those of us in Company D, 24th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment encamped on the Duck River Line. Although this particular written article pertains to the company captain (Cap'n Craddock per se, even though I'm not a strong proponent of first person), the company requisitions are important to us all! Attached is the short article I wrote, including charts and pictures. I have also attached the 1860 US Census record and pictures of Captain Lamb's grave (erected by his friends in the William's family cemetery in 1906).

So, let us take a little time to look at the social make-up of Company D, 24th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. What better way to begin this research than by looking at the captain who commanded the company for the majority of the war? The Eighth Census of the United States, 1860, taken on August 2, 1860, in Williamson County, Tennessee, shows Lamb living in the East Division, near Eagleville, Tennessee. At the time of this enumeration, he was a twenty-seven year old engineer, living alone, with a personal estate valued at $500.

Lamb enlisted in state service and was elected first lieutenant of the company on July 8, 1861, and retained the position when the regiment entered Confederate service on August 26, 1861. On August 25, 1862, Nicholas H. Lamb replaced the company’s first captain, John A. Wilson, by way of promotion. Lamb continued to serve as Company D’s commander until November 30, 1864, when he fell during the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee.

Three No. 40. SPECIAL REQUISITION forms were located in Captain Lamb’s Compiled Service Record (CSR) and are the nearest to the dates specified for the Duck River Line event.

From TNGenWeb Project on Tennessee Confederate Infantry Units:

                              "24th Tennessee Infantry Regiment:

Organized August 6, 1861; Comenced Confederate service August 24, 1861; reorganized May 2, 1862; formed Company "F", 3rd Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment April 9, 1865; paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina May 1, 1865.

                              FIELD OFFICERS

                              Colonel-R. D. Allison, H. L. W. Bratton, John A. Wilson.
                              Lieutenant Colonels-Thomas H. Peebles, J. J. Williams, H. L. W. Bratton, John A. Wilson, S. E. Shannon.
                              Majors-J. J. Williams, H. L. W. Bratton, S. E. Shannon, William C. Fielding.

Of the field officers, Colonel Allison resigned in July, 1862 and organized a squadron of cavalry. Colonel Bratton was killed January 4, 1863. Lieutenant Colonel Peebles resigned in May, 1862; Lieutenant Colonel Williams declined re-election. Major William C. Fielding died May 10, 1864.

The regiment was originally composed of 11 companies which had been organized in June, July and August 1861. They assembled at Camp Trousdale, where they were organized into a regiment, and mustered into Confederate service. Company "M", which had formerly been an independent company was not attached until early 1862, making twelve companies, which, upon reorganization, were consolidated into ten.

Soon after organization the regiment moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky. On October 23, 1861, Major General William J. Hardee reported the troops then on the line subject to his command were Hindman's, Hanson's, Hawthorn's and Allison's Infantry Regiments.. On January 31, 1862 the regiment was reported in Colonel Patrick H. Cleburne's Brigade along with the 15th Arkansas, 6th Mississippi, 23rd, 24th, and 35th (also called 5th) Tennessee Infantry Regiments. The regiment left Bowling Green February 13, 1862 and on February 23 was reported at Murfreesboro, where in Cleburne's Brigade, the 1st Arkansas had replaced the 15th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, and the Watson Battery had been added.

It arrived at Corinth February 27, and was engaged at the Battle of Shiloh, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Peebles, as part of Cleburne's Brigade, Hardee's Corps.

The brigade in this battle was composed of the 15th Arkansas, 2nd (Bate's), 23rd, 24th and 35th Tennessee, and 6th Mississippi Infantry Regiments, Shoup's Artillery Battalion, and the Watson Battery. The regiment re-entered the battle with 406 effectives, and was commended by Cleburne for steadfast valor; he also commented that Lieutenant Colonel Peebles possessed all qualifications necessary for a commander of troops in the field. No itemized record of casualties by regiments was found, but the brigade reported 1032 casualties out of 2750 engaged.

In May, 1862 the 6th Mississippi had been replaced by the 48th Tennessee Regiment in Cleburne's Brigade. In Cleburne's report of an engagement outside of Corinth on the Farmington Road on May 28, 1862, he severely criticized Colonel Allison, but commended Major Bratton for his handling of troops.

On July 8, 1862 the regiment was placed in Major General Benjamin F. Cheatham's Division, Brigadier General Alexander P. Stewart's Brigade, composed of the 4th, 5th, 24th, 31st, 33rd Tennessee Infantry Regiments, and Stanford's Mississippi Battery. These five regiments remained together for the duration of the war. This 5th Tennessee Regiment was commanded by Colonel Calvin J. Venable, and was not the same regiment with which the 24th had been associated in Cleburne's Brigade which was commanded by Colonel Benjamin Hill, and was early called the 5th, although its official designation was the 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. As part of this brigade the regiment participated in General Bragg's invasion of Kentucky, and was engaged at the Battle of Perryville October 8, 1862, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel H. L. W. Bratton. Here it suffered 68 casualties.

The regiment was next engaged at the Battle of Murfreesboro, December 31, 1862, where the 19th Tennessee Infantry Regiment was included in Stewart's Brigade. Here the regiment suffered 79 casualties out of 344 engaged. Colonel Bratton was mortally wounded, Lieutenant Colonel Wilson was wounded, and Major S. E. Shannon took command of the regiment.

Just a few things to consider and to wet our research.

Another website with some information about the 24th Tenn:

I mainly like this one because my name (an ancestor) is listed in Company A.

Wasn't Company D made of young men from the College Grove area, including the men's academy there? My mind is drawing a blank on it, but it sounds right.
