    Joe,

I am not sure about Co. D of the 24th, but I do know many of the men in Co. D, 20th Tennessee came from the College Grove area, even one of the teachers, Alexander Winn, became orderly sergeant, then adjutant. It is very possible students from the local academy enlisted in this company as well. I cannot find a roster of soldiers and do not have the time to look through individual CSRs in order to compose a roster for the 24th to find out if any of the students enlisted. I think the DRL event will have come and gone by the time I finished.

I am glad to see the interest in the company, thanks for posting the article and info, kinda puts a hole in the no overcoat theory. As far as the site-I will send every registered participant the address and directions along with an 8 digit grid cordinate, about a week before the event. This will prevent gate crashing and walk-ons. Anyone that wants to do FED and has not registered, there are some slots open. I will still take a anyone that CONTACTS me directly and makes arrangements. If youre not registered and show up, you will have wasted the day, as it is a long drive back to anywhere! If anyone is hell bent on reconning the site, the only way to preview it, is to volunteer for next SAT's(17th) workday. It will be our last before the event and we could use some selfless workers. I had originally had Tim Parson lined up to take wetplates on SUNDAY, however due to scheduling conflicts, he will be unable to make it-however, I have made arrangements for Wendall Decker to be onsite to satisfy all of you vainity needs.

This is a short, but good read. The Civil War in the Smokies by Noel Fisher [ISBN 0-937207-46-2].

            A few interesting quotes.

"While the Confederates mobilized for war. Unionists in East Tennessee were also preparing to fight, either on the side of the Federal forces gathering in the North or on their own at home. Almost immediately after the Greeneville Convention, loyalists began leaving East Tennessee to join the small Union army that was forming at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. Although Confederate troops were now stationed at Knoxville and along the railroad, they made few attempts to stop the exodus. By September enough Tennessee Unionists had reached Kentucky to form four regiments."
"Tennessee held state elections in early August, and in all three East Tennessee districts the Unionist candidates, T.A.R. Nelson, Horace Maynard, and George Bridges, openly declared that if elected they intended to take their seats in the United States Congress."
"No one can conceive the actual condition of East Tennessee, disloyal to the core, it is more dangerous and difficult to operate in than the country of an acknowledged enemy...East Tennessee is an enemy's country, its people beyond the influence and control of our troops and in open rebellion." Major General Edmund Kirby Smith
I found reference in this book before (but cannot find it now that I am actually looking for it) to men joining the Confederate service in order to get to Union lines easier. It was less risky and prevented their capture. Some of these me could be quickly outfitted and placed into regiments with men from their own county. I have seen references in other places to this same type of behavior.

Quite a bit of great information from before and during the formation of the Second Tennessee (US) can be found in The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. / Series 2 - Volume 1 starting on Page 823

An Interesting little side note; In 1997, Bob Pope(the gun show guy) brought an original Mississippi Rifle out to my house. What was of particular interest was brass studs added around the stock and wrist and a brass plate stating that it had been captured at Missionary Ridge from a Corporal(I have long since forgotten the name) in Company D, 24th TN. I always found it interesting that a MS rifle could be found in the Infantry ranks as lat in the war as Missionary Ridge.

Looking at the line up of men in Gray - I'd say that the boys in blue don't have a chance!

I think I'll go ahead and write my report to brigade that our section of the Duck River Line is secure and well guarded.

However, knowing that the boys in blue are wiley - I am requesting that anyone in Co.D 24th TN Infantry that has a shovel, grubbing hoe, axe or saw to bring them.

Here, Here, Captn' Hicks. They better start digging as soon as they arrive, as there will be a good many Spencers trained on there positions. It's a shame to have to bury so many fellow Tennesseans', mislead to their fates.
