    Hello Everyone:

    The AC Focus Group is in the process of evaluating event folders for 2009. In years past, event folders have been added as the year progresses. This is something that we are trying to avoid with our new selection process.

    I spelled out the new event folder selection process in this thread in September:

    AC Event Deconfliction

    The idea is that we have a maximum of six folders to focus the membership on what the Focus Group feels are the best opportunities based on:

    1) The Type of Event - Is it an interesting scenario? Is it something that hasn't necessarily been done before? Is it an event that hasn't been done over and over again? We watch the folders here and people either bring events to us or we notice those events that are getting a particularly good response.

    2) Scheduling - Events are put together during the course of any year. At times, events that had their own folder were scheduled close together and created potential conflict. The new system has been set up to look ahead to the next year and to create an ongoing dialogue with people from all over the country (37 representatives in the Focus Group) to select the events that get their own folder. This also helps assure that the events that get a folder are those that are well-planned and put out to folks well-ahead of time when they are making their schedules for the following year.

    We can't prevent confliction in events. We can however help the members of the AC plan ahead. We have done this by arranging the folders by year to allow people to post events ahead of time for people to think about and discuss. At the end of this month, the 2008 event folder will be put into the archives and a 2011 folder will be created. If you are planning an event for 2009, 2010, or 2011, please post it in the proper year to let everyone know what you are planning.

    2009 Events - There are currently three events with folders for 2009 - Into the Piney Woods - March 10-14, 2009, Lost Tribes - October 2-4, 2009 and Bummers - November 13-15, 2009. We have two events that we are currently considering for 2009 - Duck River Line - January 31 - February 1, 2009 and Assault on Allegheny - July 24 - July 26, 2009.

    If you have an event that you want to submit for a folder in 2009, the deadline for submission is December 31, 2008. Once the events to be considered for 2009 are discussed and the folders given to those events, we will not be adding folders for other events during the course of the year. We have a maximum of six folders, but if we end up with four or five events after all submittals have been decided, those will be the event folders for 2009.

    If you have an event that you want to "float out there" for consideration for 2010 and beyond, we encourage you to post in the year that you plan to do the event. 2011 will be the beginning of the 150th Anniversary Cycle (for 1861) and getting the word out ahead of time will help you determine the interest level that might be there for your event.

    Be watching the event folder on January 1st when the 2011 event folder is posted.
