Gentlemen:
Since the inception of this event, the 33rd Alabama Infantry has been the host unit. Clearly, the Battle of Selma is a mainstream event, but we have worked hard to place it at the high end of that nomenclature. Some, perhaps many, of you have attended, and, I trust, enjoyed the variety of activity that this historic city has to offer the historian. Some years ago, Bill Rambo, military commander for the event, attempted to set authenticity and safety standards in place so that the event would continue to represent a reasonably authentic portrayal of the CW soldier and warfare. That attempt was met with much resistance by units who were either too lazy or complacent to improve themselves. We moved forward with those units who were willing to improve, but Selma, like the hobby in general, has taken a downward turn in the past few years. Attendance seems off at almost every event we have attended in the past couple of years.
Rather than going forward with a potentially mediocre event in 2009, the Battle Committee determined to cancel the event in order to re-invogorate and renew for 2010. However, in the interim, some Selma locals with the assistance of the Alabama Division of Reenactors, have moved in and taken over the show. The results of this takeover are yet to be seen. However, the 33rd Alabama Infantry and Rambo will no longer host nor command this event.
Caveat emptor.
