  • Texas Rifles Out-Post 2009: "Race to New Kent Court House," May 15-17

    Friends,
The Texas Rifles would like to extend a warm--if tardy--invitation to any members of the AC who may be interested in attending our "Texas Rifles Out-Post" event, currently scheduled for May 15-17, 2009. Located on 160 acres of privately owned property near Lovelady, Texas, this event will will feature a scenario drawn from a little known episode following the Texas Brigade's baptism of fire at the battle of Eltham's Landing, Virginia, on May 7, 1862. Immediately following the engagement at Eltham's, Hood's regiments fell back to Barhamsville and resumed their role as rear-guard for the entire Virginia army. For the next two days, the men of the Texas Brigade found themselves in a fighting foot-race along the Williamsburg Road with the Union Army of the Potomac's unexpectedly aggressive advance-guard. This yankee force--composed of the 2d Rhode Island and 98th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiments, the 6th U.S. and 8th Illinois Cavalry Regiments, and Robertson's and Tidball's Artillery Batteries--had pushed some twenty miles ahead of the main enemy army. On numerous occasions between May 8 and 9, the Texans erected obstacles and field works to obstruct the road and skirmished with the pursuing Federals, most notably at Slatersville. Upon reaching New Kent Court House, Hood's Brigade finally re-established contact with other formations of the Virginia army and was no longer in danger of being overwhelmed.

For the purposes of this event, participants will portray members of Company C, 5th Texas Infantry and Company D, 2d Rhode Island Infantry actively involved in rear-guard/advance-guard operations. Civilian participants will primarily portray residents of Slatersville and New Kent Court House. Civilian involvement will include interpreting a homestead site contructed specifically for this event. The event will begin on Saturday morning, May 16, and conclude at noon on Sunday, May 17.

Online registration is now underway. For more information about the event, including registration, physical impression guidelines, rations, the scenario, photographs of the nearly completed homestead, and primary source observations of the actual "Race to New Kent Court House," please visit:

We hope to see some of y'all in Texas come May 15!
    Warmest regards,
    Phil Sozansky,
    Captain of the Texas Rifles
