    BUMMERS FEDERAL STRUCTURE

We Are Proud to Announce the Federal Structure for the Bummers Event November 13-15, 2009!

FROM "THE MARCH TO THE SEA AND BEYOND" By Joseph Glatthaar - "Initially, Sherman hoped to organize foragers for each brigade, but that soon proved unsatisfactory, since too many division commanders sent out only fifty men per brigade, not enough to provide for all the troops. As the brigade organization began to break down, many commanders decentralized the system even more and had each regimental commander assign foraging duties to one or two companies. The forage they gathered no longer went to the brigade commissary; it went directly to the men in each regiment."

GENERAL STRUCTURE - There will be three divisions of the 15th Corps represented at Bummers. Each division will be made up of six foraging parties - from six regiments within that division. Each foraging party will have 25 (registered) soldiers. You will begin this event from the git-go as a "Bummer". We are organizing the foraging parties prior to the event so that everyone will get to forage. We need to think in different terms for this event. These will not be "Companies", but "Foraging Parties" from eighteen different regiments - six from each division. There will not be an overall commander for the event, but a "Ranking Officer" for each division, with the WIG providing the "Ranking Officer" for the overall event.

REGIONAL RECRUITING - To attract the kind of numbers that we want, we have split the recruiting process into three "regions" - The WIG for the Southeast; The Stonewall Brigade for the East; and the ONV for the Midwest. A map is attached to illustrate how we have divided the recruiting. This map is not set in stone, but is meant to show how we would ideally like to draw from three different distinct areas. We recognize that the vast majority of the people who attend the event will be from the southeast, midwest and east so each group's name is shown in their area of concentration.

RANKING STRUCTURE FOR EACH FORAGING PARTY (25 "Bummers"):

    1 - Lieutenant
    1 - Sergeant
    2 - Corporals
    20 - Privates

REGISTRATION will open in November, 2008 and Ken Cornett of Mess No. 1 will be in charge of registration. For registration, we ask those who have volunteered to raise "companies" to instead raise "foraging parties". If you are able to raise 25 soldiers for a foraging party, you will be able to select which regiment you will represent. Please work with the ranking officers listed within your region to let them know that you intend to raise a foraging party. For those parties that are unable to raise the full twenty-five (registered), it may become necessary to combine numbers - at the discretion of the organizers.

3RD DIVISION, XV CORPS - Old Northwest Volunteers - Ranking Officer - Captain Terry Sorchy

You Will Choose Foraging Parties From Six of the Following Regiments:

    1st Brigade

    6) 18th Wisconsin

    2nd Brigade

    7) 56th Illinois
    8) 10th Iowa
    9) 80th Ohio

So, if you are interested in serving as the leader of a foraging party, it will be up to you to raise 25 men in order to represent a regiment. We ask that you contact the ranking officer for each division with your intention to lead a foraging party. Work directly with these division commanders until the division reaches its quota of six foraging parties.

We think that this will be a unique structure and will allow everyone to fully participate. We didn't want to rotate foraging parties and have others standing around. If you have any questions about this structure, please send me an e-mail at etinohio@msn.com. We will make a separate announcement for the Confederate Structure very soon. Thanks for your interest and we look forward to your participation in November of 2009.

      Re: Bummers Federal Structure

I just wanted to follow up, because we have had a few questions regarding the map and recruiting areas.

The map is mainly intended to show how we plan to attract 500 people to the event. By working with groups who are based in different regions - WIG in the Southeast; ONV in the Midwest; and SWB in the Northeast; we hope that they can draw attendees from their respective areas. We understand that there are affiliations that are not geographical and the areas in the map are not intended as hard-and-fast "territories".

Oh man.. as a potential WIG recruit of TN, I'd want to be in the 76th Ohio "Lickin' Brigade" of Licking County, OH. Sounds like some bully bummers to me! They take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. I'll alert the mess mates.. can't wait for this one!

          Re: Bummers Federal Structure

          Jon,

That's the spirit! I know the organizational structure is "novel" to many of us reenactors. But my esteemed Buckeye counterparts are correct with the "interesting" way the commands are laid out. For the Federals this event is about the foraging parties, the Bummers. Keep this in mind when looking into the books, diaries, articles, etc for your research.

The stuff that happens at the event happened in 1864.

Hey even I'm jazzed about the Federals at the event, and I'm not even going to BE on the Bummers side. That's some good stuff. (yeah I'm biased)

For my southern minded reenacting friends keep your eyes on this folder in the near future. Gub'nor Joe Brown's Pets will be represented as well. Take that as you will if you know the history of the First Georgia Militia Division and their comrades (the Georgia State Line, The Augusta and Athens Battalions, and Capt. Anderson's boys.)

Her are a few words for the Federals that will sure to send some shivers along their collective spines when out on patrol at Bummers.

          Wheeler's Cavalry.

We are continuing to build a database of those groups who are interested in attending the event. We are sending out periodic newsletters to keep everyone in the loop on the latest news. If your organization is interested in attending Bummers, please send us an e-mail at etinohio@msn.com and we will add you to the list. Remember that anyone who can meet the event guidelines will be welcomed with open arms.

              Herb,

Yeah.. soon to be Lt. Kaelin Vernon is gathering our foraging party..we'll fall in where there is need. KY and TN will be represented on the Federal side for sure. I'm doing research all the while on the various regiments on the march. Hey that is half the 'battle' right?

I have asekd Terry the permission to raise a company. I am awaiting his approval. Looks like we would portray the 10th Iowa. So, if you want to fight with a bunch of Hawkeyes...

                        Heath:

We are counting on all of you patriotic Georgians to defend your home state against these Yankee invaders. ;)

We will be releasing the Confederate structure at the beginning of October. We hope to have registration open for everyone early in November. Holler, the opportunity for native sons of different states to portray native sons was one of the allures of using eighteen different regiments.

... And as if the Bummers don't have enough to worry about, just remember Federals... it will be The Critters portraying Wheeler's Cavalry. Better not wander off too far from your comrades when foraging boys.

Heath you'll be missed but it's a year away.. you just might get on my nerves by then.. ha!

But more seriously; I did some quick research on the aformentioned 76th Ohio Volunteers. I found that the veteran regiment was issued fresh zouave styled jackets and chose to dress up their impression by wearing the kepi mainly. Whole companies would not have worn sack or fatigue jackets instead, would they? Also, Were there many US veteran regiments who did this late in the war? If so.. for authenticity's sake, what do this event's coordinators expect of these regimental companies? Is there a group of folks out there that are able to authentically portray a company with such a distinct uniform? It would be neat if they could.. we do have a years time. And of course I understand that we will be portraying company-sized units of these whole regiments and that since the 'focus' won't be wholly upon them per se. Just wonderin' fellas..

This is genius Eric...the best idea yet at trying to make a fair and equitable recruiting effort.

Reckon I fall in under the ONV? I am most decidely "northwest" out here in Idaho.

For the Critters, this may be their dream job I imagine their kit will include various lengths of stout rope...

Jon - a number of units went fancy when they converted to Veteran status. The 48th OVI is one with tremendous photo documentation coming through New Orleans after being released from Camp Ford enroute Ft Blakely (they were not with Sherman).
