  • What are you doing to be in shape?

    Friends,

Only a few months till we climb those red hills in Georgia. Herb said earlier that one needs to be in fairly good shape climb them. He's not kidding. The thing about Rich Mountain was you went up one be hill, then down it on the other side. At Bummers you may be going up and down a lot...more like Pickett's Mill.

So, what have you been doing to stay in shape? Being retired Army, I can't get the running out of me. I do at least two miles every other day...sometimes three. It's not only great for the respiratory system, but for the legs. Your legs will be key to this event.

    So what are you doing?:sarcastic

Riding my bike about 8 miles a day with a back pack full of PBR seems to be working out just fine for me. But I am young, dumb, and live in a college town.

Ive been on a weight loss/job attaining goal now for a little over 2 years. I run, walk, use the eliptical, ride a stationary bike, climb stairs, lift weights and run obstacle courses. I could always use more work, after all, who couldnt!? But, in that time I've accomplished some goals, and still pursuing others. When I started, I was 340lb at 6'2", and now Im down to about 255lb at 6'3", give or take a few lbs based on what I eat, what I do at the gym, etc. Im not in the best shape of my life, but there's still more than 3 months to go. Ill be ready! :wink_smil

        Hallo!

        Not enough.... Sigh.

In 2004, I was doing two hours a day at the Wreck Center, seven days a week- including 3-5 miles of brisk-walking (4 mph) on the track, 5 miles at 15 mph on a stationary bike hills course, 45 minutes on a treadmill at 4 to 4.2 mps (4.2 being a jog), 3-6 weight machines, a few free weights. A hour a week swimming.

No dieting, but a somewhat strict and limited diet- no coffee, no candy, no cakes or pies, low on starches, no white breads and very few dark breads, balanced meals, no fast food, no fried foods. Etc.

        No smoking, drinking, drugs, etc.

Pretty much the same except the distances are down, the diet is strict but not so strict, and the Wreck Center is only four days a week for an hour.
And have replaced the bike with English style horse riding. And the treadmill with a Chinese QiGong exercise class and a Tai Chi Class.
(Yeah, that cost me an extra 7-10 pounds this year. Sigh).

I need to get over this Slump and Malaise.

Re: What are you doing to be in shape?

In the summer, I run about 25 miles a week on a hilly road and lift weights 2-3 times a week. My legs never get tired at any of these events, but I am old and my upper body can get worn out if I try to carry too much. Most of the other Militia are in better shape. We play the way we train, so know your limitations and don't try to carry more than the Militia men chasing you down.

And don't go to sleep if you are a forager. ;)

This same topic came up for Rich Mountain and soon developed into fear of tigers and bears. So, are there bears and tigers in Georgia? For Rich Mountain, BGR, IPW and other up and down or just down events, I trained by carrying a heavy racing form to the track and only drinking lite beer, so, if I were going to Bummers, I would follow the same workout schedule.

I spend an hour to and hour and a half at the gym, M-F. I run two miles and then do some minor weight lifting. Been at for 3 weeks now, already noticing a difference and feeling better. I was already wanting to drop a few pounds, so that with eating a bit less has been working. Ready for them, there hills.

Curt, are you going to Bummers? Maybe we'll finally get to meet in person--funny that two Ohioans have to go all the way to Georgia to meet. :)

For regular exercise, I mow the lawn. Three acres with a walk-behind mower gets me my regular walking in, and I backpack in a hilly national forest nearby often enough to make sure I'm still in shape for it.

Went there a week or so ago, period backpacking for a few days with a couple guys, and it didn't seem too bad, so hoping I'm ready. I'm never going to be able to carry much or go very fast, but so far it's been good enough to get by.

It's a 36 hour event. I figure somebody will forage this five gallon whiskey jug from me within the first fifteen minutes, and it will then be somebody else's problem on how to tote it.

Either that, or I'll just lay up in the woods with it. Should be enough to get by on.

                        Terre,
You shouldn't have posted about five gallons of whiskey! There may be men present who are less than honorable and five gallons of whiskey will tempt them beyond their meager limits to resist.

I have been hitting the elliptical machine at home 3-5 times a week on hills and doing a lot of crossfit training at the FD. It is some great stuff. Check out this website.

They are varied workouts that you can do anywhere. Some of the stuff you don't even need gym equipment. They are great core training workouts. I lost ten pounds so far. Hope to lose another ten before Bummers.
