I play a little soccer and I try to keep up with my kids. I save my smoking for events.

The answer is simple. Have major surgery! Case in point- I lost 35 lbs. after an appendectomy back in 2003. The Advanced Guard was my first event "back". (Then I found I was too weak and sick to hang for more than a day, but it still made for some good "firper", all right!)

Im not gwine to Bummers........ but I have kept a fair amount of weight off now for a few years by typically only eating one reasonable meal a day (at about 5:30) and lots of water thru the day. It really works for me.

Re: What are you doing to be in shape?

Due to real world military service related injuries, I can no longer run (without being impaired for several days afterwards), or do any impact type activities without aggravating my pre-existing issues.. But I do walk several miles a day, and eat better now than before I retired. Fortunately my conditioning hasn't deteriorated too much. I've had no problems with terrain at events such as Rich Mtn. BGR or IPW.

In my experience, mental conditioning and attitude are as much a contributor to making the distance, as is ones physical conditioning. I've known muscle heads in exceptional shape that simply couldn't hang because they let a little discomfort distract them from their objective and cause them them fall out, and I've seen men in great shape that had never experienced real physical stress let a little exhaustion become a major issue in their mind which caused them to step aside where others continued on. I think it's a much a matter of experience and knowing your own capabilities and limitations as it is preparation for such a physical challenge.

Lots of Hockey, and plenty of stair climbing at work. Also my eat less, move more diet, has let me drop 15lbs off my frame.

Brian, you are so right about this. I have lived most of my adult life with some sort of pain, but I've gotten used to it (back, legs). Mentally, I've always set and achieved my goals for conditioning and the military taught me to do this. Most everyone can do this if they learn how. Most everyone on this forum can make it at Bummers.

I know you guys want all the folks possible at your event and rightly so. I am all for pushing people...however a man still must know his lane or else y'all will be stuck worrying about modern medical contingencies instead of doing yall's event.

I have been the medical case and I still sting from the embarrassment and I would never put myself in that situation again.

Chris, sounds like time to get a horse and join the Cavalry (and let your equine friend do most of the walkin'). In fact you look great sitting on that fine example of a horse in your avatar!

When I get on a horse of my ability, the $.25 runs right about the time they call for a flanking attack or my wife comes out of the WALMART.

I sure have enjoyed the time on your loaned mount, good man. Yep. Thems' some memories of a time when the hobby was good right there.

In real life keep to the usual regimen: 2.5 mile run, alternate days speed walk 3.5 miles, in between days calisthenics and light-moderate weights...hope like heck it works...(worked for Rich Mt.)

Round is a shape. Anyway, I eat whatever I want, I just work hard and bear hunt in the Shenandoah Valley. If you cant run with the dogs don't get out of the truck.

Eliptical machine on max difficulty 5 days a week for 4 miles at a time and going less on food... good stuff. I have cut-out greasy foods entirely and only eat fruit, yogurt, lean meats and vegetables in small quantities and no snacking.

I noticed that I sweat more than I should when doing long road marches, probably more than your average person does... while a modern Camelbak solves the water-intake problem, period canteens hold way less that a Camelbak. I guess that just means I have to refill it quicker as I drink more water.

                                Cheers -Johnny
