Re: What are you doing to be in shape?

I now get up at 6:15am and walk/jog 3-5 miles every day Mon.-Fri. I have been doing this for two months. I'll do more jogging over the next month and next month I start strength training with a personal trainer. Then within the last 60 days before Bummers, I'll go to two workouts per day. Seems like alot of over kill when all I need to do practice striking matches, but I'll keep it up.

run a couple of miles and bike a few miles a day. I also go to the gym to lift weights and swim. Also cut down to a six pack of beer a weekend, during classes!

Re: What are you doing to be in shape?

I just do the usual 3.5 mile run 3 times a week. Other than that I sling a few bags of feed (50 lbs.) at work, work around the farm, walk the dog, mow the yard. Nothing out of the routine.

What kind of shape are we looking at?
Meaning, is a person better off preparing for long walks requiring a great deal of endurance (say 5-10 mile hikes) or is more likely that one should prepare for short running sessions (like several sessions of double quicking, or marching 1 mile hard march and resting for some time)?
Just wondering how to top off my preparations as the event draws near.

It all depends on whether you plan to be a hound or were you born to be a rabbit. You don't have enough time left to become a good hound.

Try and get as much running and walking as possible with some kind of pack, do squats, leg waits. Basically just keep working the legs;)

This is going to be awesome.

Re: What are you doing to be in shape?

In my basement doing CrossFit style workouts: pull-ups, dips, muscle ups, push-ups, cleans, med ball bounces, deadlifts, even tire flipping (out in the yard of course) .

                            5k runs for speed/endurance.

Plyometrics for power (have you guys seen the photos of where we’re going to be?) and to strengthen joints and tendons as an injury preventative.

Emphasis on core strength to try prevent as much back pain and fatigue as possible, given that this will only be the 3rd time this year “the gear” has been on my back.

Working out 2x per day 3 days per week. Will bump to 2x 4 days per week in October in addition to hill run/walks in brogans at the park by my house.

Time does not permit me to walk 20 miles per day, so I decided to create an intense, almost equal (to extended physical activity) calorie burn as well strengthen my body to prepare for the potential pain and fatigue

I’ve dropped 12lbs. and I’m looking to lose another 15-20 by the event. General Physical Preparedness is more the goal, but I would like to be much leaner for the event, so I don’t look like, well, Beerkeg…:D

Overkill? Maybe, but considering the magnitude of what we are about to undertake, as well as the investment I am making in improving my kit, the last thing that I want to do is either be injured or be unable to keep up. Not to mention that I want to be able to move fast...in either direction as necessary.

Bottom line—the pics that we have of the actual boys from the march show some lean individuals that looked like hoofing out some serious mileage was not near the issue that it will be for us.

I hope that I’m ready when November 13 rolls around. All jokes aside, do you really want to get all the way there and then be stuck on the sidelines because you weren’t physically ready?

I'm sitting on my ass at my desk reading all these posts of some rather industrious individuals. There are men twice my age posting about how they are running MILES (plural) a day and I, being much younger than some, am playing basketball with a bunch of 16-year-olds at the school I teach at and getting circles run around me. I'm going to start walking to town and back in full pack starting on Monday though. Maybe I will be able to keep up with the older-timers.

Looking forward to meeting you all there,

Lets see. 4-5 mile run 3-4 times a week(Up and down hills. Not flat stuff) 45 sit ups 3 time a week same with the push-ups. Work out with the wieghts 3 days a week. Lost almost 70+ lbs the last 18 months. Not bad for an old guy.
Like I say right face foward march at he double quick, then about a 1/4 mile later watch all you weekend worriers throw up:D
