  • Directions to Bummers

Looking for some advice on routes to the event. Having read about the difficuties in navigating through Atlanta and not totally trusting the reliability of Mapquest I checked out directions from Mapquest and Google maps. Now I would like some advice from those of you who live in the area, or are familiar with these routes.

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Dave,

I sent an attachment to all company members with directions that Herb had written out. Did the attachment not come through with the email? I can send it separately if you need it.

      David and all,

Try to get around Atlanta before 3pm. After that TRAFFIC JAM TIME!!!!

Take I-285 around. I would NOT suggest going inside the perimeter of I-285 into Atlanta.

The address given on our website works perfectly if you use Google Earth or Google Maps. Yahoo Maps and Map Quest are sub par.

I got a GPS for this trip, now I just have to figure out how to use it in order to put in those directions, because when I just tested the route the unit comes up with, I go straight through Atlanta. Ugh. Why did I decide to use this and not a map?

Just to add to what Herb has said here, when we went down to Prelude to Chickmauga a few years ago, we hit I-285 at 7:30 PM on a Friday night and sat for about 1 1/2 hours. Whatever everyone can do to get through Atlanta before rush hour (and get on site and be ready to go) would be a wise move. :D

Oh I trust the directions provided, there's no question about that. It's just figuring out that little electronic box that's suppsed to tell me where to go. From being the kid who could set the clock on the VCR, I am now the curmudgeon cursing modernity.

                      Re: Directions to Bummers

I heartily concur about getting thru Atl early. Once it gets bad, ( not if, once it does) you could quite possibly burn 2 1/2-3 hours to cover a 70-80 mile stretch. I have actually carried my horse to a construction site on the west side of the ghetto a couple times so that I didn't have to go home and wait until 7:00 to get on the road on a friday night from the northeast area.

I have no stake in when you arrive, so this is purely advise from a guy who hates to sit in traffic! :baring_te

How is the traffic on I-285 between 8 am and noon? Hope to leave Wis. between 7 & 8 thursday night and drive right through.

Brian, I presume you will be on I-75 heading south. The morning rush 3-4 hours should be winding down by 8:00. Take I-285 to the west, I think it says "birmingham" but watch out, east and west cross over each other. The west exit ramps are on the left, and the east are on the right.
                          Welcome to Atlanta.

Once you are past Atlanta, which way is going to be quicker/smoother: 85 or 75? Which offers the best drive once off the interstate?

Most importantly, where is the last place to get a hot meal (24 hours) before hitting the site? Gas?

                              Re: Directions to Bummers

Travel time from either I-75 or I-85 are going to be just about equal. I have them at about 30-35 miles and 45 -60 minutes each. There will be construction on I-85 but usually moves ok. I avoid I-75 under most any circumstance. From I-85 in lagrange take Ga Hwy 109. Probably want to eat, stock up, enjoy your final moments of modern life before you leave lagrange, i don't thnk there is much in between.
