  • Federals - Condition of Your Gear

    Federals:

Just a gentle reminder as you prepare your gear for the event. Remember, we have just left Atlanta (November 15th). The Federals were re-supplied with Federal issue gear when the 65,000 men were selected to go on the March to the Sea. This means that your gear should be relatively clean. We have been garrisoned in Atlanta for a couple of months. So, while we don't expect you to be ready for parade, we also don't want everyone showing up looking like we have been on campaign for months and months. Your rifles should be spotless and your gear should look good. Keep that in mind as you get everything together. Thanks!

And in case you haven't visited the guidelines page in a while and you have questions, they can all be answered here:

Speaking as alowly private in the the 48th Indiana infantry regiment..we were sitting in Huntsville in January while our veterans were furloughed and we reenlisted there. Then we marched to Cartersville Georgia to guard a railroad until October missing the entire Atlanta battle....so we are itching for a fight and gettin back to campainging...We are looking far too tidy to be the downright nasty soldiers we are.We will follow Uncle Billy to Hell and back...:D

If it is on the list, then yes, your shoes are OK. And that goes for everyone who has this same question. :D

            Eric,

I definitely have to second your point here. After examining our regiment's paperwork from the Fall if 1864 at NARA, we've had to stress to the guys in our foraging party how new the clothing and equipment was when the unit left Atlanta. Hell, the majority of the regiment (as well as numerous other regiments at the time) was composed of somewhat older men--mostly conscripts and recent volunteers--who had been in the army anywhere between a few days and a couple of months. Some of the paperwork seems to allude to many having been partially outfitted in their home state, then provided with whatever they were lacking upon arriving in Georgia.

Green troops and fresh clothes kindof flips the whole cliched "Western Federal" thing on its head.

            Looking forward to it!

Well your in luck Craig. I kitted Mark Gibson out last week with all my quality fresh federal stuff. I am wearing some stuff that is a little rough around the edges but I am sure it will be fine.

All this fresh kit takes all the fun out of western fed! But I am sure the event itself will make up for that. Looking forward to being in the same division with you guys.

I'd wear the new ones. Might as well break then in.

They'll all be painted in red Georgia clay soon anyhow, so new will become dirty real quick.

Don't forgot to bring woolens with which to ward off frostbite. Gangrene is not your friend.
