Dan - its a toss-up, which is good for price comparisons. DFW, Jackson (MS), Houston and probably Baton Rouge are about equidistant.

If the goal is to save on a rental car and get closer to save time, head to Shreveport, Longview TX or Alexandria and find one of us to pick you up.

Major airports are DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) and New Orleans International. We had folks who flew into both spots last time around.

      Hope this helps.

        Fly and drive

Last year, a couple of us flew into Jackson via Dallas. Got to see Vicksburg for the first time as well as a few other places on the sojourn. It was something close to four hours in driving time to get there. Didn't mind at all as it was green country I'd never seen before.

Present plan for a group of us from the Pacific Nor'west to fly into Jackson again like last time. In addition to Vicksburg, we're contemplating Champion Hill, Port Hudson and Ft. DeRussey. Museums in Jackson and Vicksburg are also on the wish list.

You can read about Vicksburg all you like. If you haven't seen it, you just cannot imagine the place. I wouldn't have wanted to scale some of those heights or run some of those gauntlets. Then again, there's something about having rifled cannons shooting through the various entrenchments that didn't make defending those heights any easier.

Then there's the Cairo. That was quite a monster on the water. Some great artifacts were retrieved from her.

To say I was smitten by Vicksburg last year would be an understatement.

If you want to fly into a smaller airport, the Shreveport Airport is pretty nice and only an hour drive from the event site. I live in Natchitoches, so I am sure I will most likely pick someone up for this event.

            Re: Flying In??

I can fly in to either Shreveport or Alexandria on AA. Gotta book my flights early as I'm redeeming miles and the free seats go fast. I'd like to not have to rent a car for a week just to have it sit in a parking lot for five days. Anyone know if the organizers are going to help people get in from the local airports?

              Steve,

I'm not volunteering to set up a shuttle service but between folks from your own company and other participants I feel confident that we can square you away.

Just as we did at BGR we need to save as much space in the parking areas as we can so carpooling will be important. That said, I'll stress now that there needs to be an agreement among carpoolers that if someone needs to drop out from the column that they find a temporary home with the civilians or join our logistics crew. The last go-around we had whole squads of men leaving when one member of the carpooling team decided to bail.

                Fred,
No worries. Just gathering intel. My options are many and I'm sure my captain will be looking out for me. I'm probably just a tad bit too excited after reading a few of Gary Joiner's books.

In the end I may just go solo and saddle up the iron horse. Then I can do some traveling after the event (Fort De Russy, Vicksburg, Champion Hill, Corinth, Fort Donnelson) head up to Iowa to visit the family and back to California. Kinda the icing on the cake so to speak.

                Best Regards

                  Gathering intel here:

I am exploring the option of flying. If I can get to Baton Rouge airport, anyone near there I can ride with?

It's 1500+ miles from Hartford, CT and I remember how exhausting it was for the 1200+ one way for Marmy's.

What time does the event end on Sat.?
