Folks believe it or not we are only 112 days away from as real a deal as you will ever see.
You have 4 tremendous Captains to serve under in blue for IPW so step up and let your druthers be known so we can get an early idea for rations, company organization, etc. Major Sorchy is working hard on the plan and as this is his second stint as the Blue Big Bug, you know it will be good.
Keep reviewing the message board and federal guidelines on the website for updates.
We will be starting a "carpool request" file for those who are flying in and need a ride from an airport or from home. Expect that to begin Dec 1 with details to follow. I remember fondly the boys from California who launched across the desert in a rental RV, picking some of us up along the way. It was genius, often hysterical and really lowered the logistics burden for all.
A note on fuel prices. I would not be a bit surprised to see gas break $2.00 everywhere soon as reduced demand runs the show. OPEC is getting nervous but the last two production cuts have not dented the slide from $147 to $54. In short, carpool is obviously the way to go but it is nice to see gas at a double cheese burger per gallon rather than #1 Super Size.
As for the airlines, many of them got bit hard by this sudden freefall as they were stuck with contracts at the higher prices. That said, some ticket prices are coming down and may improve. As you check, make sure you note the number of seats remaining on each leg and have a couple of routes in mind. Use both the Expedia/Hotwire type sites as well as individual airlines to check prices. Expedia sites can compare mixed airline trips that often cost way less than sticking with one airline.
With auto gas prices coming down faster than airline fuel prices, you may want to consider driving if the numbers work out.
Airline bags - only Southwest is still allowing two bags with no charge. Get creative if you need to. If you fly together, combine both weapons in one case, etc. More from the veteran fliers among us later.
Fred and Tom - thanks so much for making this a Tues-Sat deal...arriving on a Monday evening and having part of Saturday and all Sunday to get home is a boon to getting there and back and the timing makes ticket prices a bit cheaper by giving us more alternatives.
