  • For the Federals

    Gents,
The end of registration is about a month away. That means that if you are going or know someone that would like to get an experience of a lifetime PLEASE COME TO THE EVENT!
Holloways and Murrays Company's are nearly full, but we have AMPLE ROOM in Captains Powell and Comers Company's.
We have four company's we need to field, we have a color guard, commisary, two wagons and an unending will to succeed.
If you dont come we cant have these events. Simple as that. All the planning and dreams are just that if we dont have you to carry them out. Yes its a long time to take off. But guys this is the "how a civil war soldier felt" event of the year.
If youve never lived out in the middle of nowhere out of your pack, marching and fighting and living off the land for a week then you have no idea how "REAL" the experience is.
Get your pards get any that want to really find out whats behind those stories we always read about the men during the war and come join us.
    Cheers

    Re: For the Federals

A note from a real Hawkeye:

Iowa rarely gets its fair share of honors when talking about the Civil War. Iowa had its fair share of fights( Wilson's Creek,Shiloh, Pea Ridge, Vicksburg,Atlanta, Cedar Creek to name a few) but is lost to the "glory" regiments of the east. This year we Iowans are happy to follow our legacy of those Hawkeyes to Lousiana.

We want all of you who can make it to register soon. Don't miss this chance to find out what it means to be a "real" soldier for a week. Find out what you have been reading all those years. If you are a teacher, you can use these experiences to help your students.

    Register, register, register!

Its like the inverse of the "Field of Dreams": Come and it will be built!

In my time in the hobby, there have only been three other events that approach this. The first two were back in the nineties, then BGR. There are no plans for another after IPW. I think chances for another event like this in the near future are slim, given the focus we will all take on the sesquicentennial.

There are events we do for the public to help them understand the life of the soldier and there are events we do for ourselves so that we can gain more insight into the life of the soldier. The latter gives the former depth and meaning and I wouldn't miss it!

Start buing your wife flowers every week.
      Do the dishes every night.
Plan a family vacation for the summer after the event.
Whatever you have to do to get that Kitchen Pass...

      DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        Re: For the Federals

I figure I will chime in here and over on the Aufmuth call to arms, 'cause I don't care whether a person comes as yank, reb or civilians, but I do hope you come. I have been in this hobby a long time. BGR was Fred and I trying to put an event together that would be something we would want to attend. It turned out pretty well. Into the Piney Woods is the second installment on that vision, and for me, probably the last. If someone else wants to jump up and go for the extended time period in a remote location with the goal of giving folks a glimplse into the real misery and joy of soldiering, I hope they do so, but as I said, it probably won't be me. Jack King, who some of you have heard of, the fellow that put on the Red River I and II had a vision. We are just pushing old Jack's vision to a new level, but owe him a debt of gratitude for what he did that helped us see the need to do this. Jack is old. I am old, but not as old as Jack, and if you miss this one, you miss something special, 'cause it is designed for the hardy men of reenacting that want more than the 36 hour experience. Folks, as far as I am concerned, it is now or never, 'cause you might not get another opportunity for a long time to experience real soldiering unless you are really a soldier, that is.

          Re: For the Federals

I would like to echo what has been written. This season marks my 19th season. I have done some great events(Wilson's Creek 1991, Nashville 1995, Raymond 1998,TAG 2003, Rich Mountain 2006 these were some of the best I know I am leaving out a couple.) but BGR blew my mind.

As my children get older, and I get older events like this will be more difficult to attend. Register and have the experience of a lifetime!

There is a Catch-22 in the hobby...
We all read that the life of a soldier was toil, tedium, and monotony. ...drill, drill, drill ...sleep, eat, march... sleep, eat, march ...moments of extreme terror ...drill, drill, drill ...sleep, eat, march... sleep, eat, march

How do you experience that in 36 hours?

            Easy answer: You can't.

Yes, this will be special indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed doing Confederate at BGR and I know I'm going to be tickled doing Federal at this one. Instead of listening to the rest of us tell our Piney Woods stories ad nauseum in the future, everyone should sign up so they can go home with their own stories to share and memories to cherish.

If anyone is West of the big river - or even slightly East for that matter, and you would like to come to New Madrid Missouri, I'll cart your carcass down there with me if travel or fuel is a problem.

I've got a nice big Suburban I can take and so far only have 4 in it including myself. One of those travelling with me is the overall Confederate commander, so using my very subtle interrogation skills, I hope to gather some intel from him on the way down :wink_smil. I can get 4 more in it if need be. So if that's holding you back, that particular problem is now gone.

And if you're wanting to go Federal and sitting the fence, please consider signing up for my company, Company F, at this event.

                Michael,
In order to obtain intelligence from the overall Confederate commander, you would be assuming that there is intelligence to gather. Baron von Aufmuth knows all too well that the ghost of Dick Taylor resides in the piney woods of Kisatchie and will no doubt be seeking advice from the good generals kind hearted spirit if need be.

Boy, I'd sure like to add a comment to that statement, but I'll let someone else take a friendly swipe at Frank.

Frank of the Great North, aka Rev. Pompey, Four Fingers Frank, and Baron Von Aufmuth certainly has the intelligence to handle any situation that might pop up in the piney woods of Kisatchie. I have no doubt about his intelligence, just his sanity!:wink_smil But I do know he is studying Hannibals tactics and has asked the National Forest Service for permission to allow elephants in the Kisatchie.

Frankly the big reason I am so into this event is I am doing it and dedicating it to my son Austin. I last saw him March 10th 2004, he passed away March 11th 2004. I found out about it March 13th. He always was a man to look at you and see the good and know that even if you thought you couldnt make it you had it in you to keep going.

It is wise to bring two shirts. A contract one and one you might have got from home. They dont really take up any room or weight.

Early March in Lousiana can be almost any kind of weather. It can be cold. It can rain. It can be warm. It can be all three in a matter of a couple of days. Only advice I can give is carry and wear what you got, 'cause that is what a soldier did. He didn't plan his wardrobe on the weather. He was there and the weather was what it was. I hope I don't sound too blunt in answering you this way, but six weeks out makes it impossible to forecast the weather. Be prepared for what ever it is.
