    Cody,

It is too bad you didn't have our bugler's instrument to beat against that tree. I'm sure many a man in the Federal battalion would have paid to watch you bang it against a tree.

    And Jesus wept,

      [HOUSTON] TRI-WEEKLY TELEGRAPH, October 28, 1863,

      Wanted.

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

When Tom organizes the next one we will allow only musical instruments on the wagons.

Each will be locked in a heavy case and I pitty the sod that looses the keys in the woods.

When folks ask what the best way to prepare for the event is we will tell them to smash instruments in bags against trees. They can also be told to have someone spray them with a garden hose and then spend a night in a walk-in cooler.

        The Frenchman's account is good.

I like the idea of puttimg the instruments on the wagon. If I get my hands on them I will hold them for ransom for freedom and equel rights...but if the temperature drops i might ask for some dry blankets too.

If I didn't love Silas like a brother, that blankity-blank banjo would have surely been on one of those wagons.

                  Andrew,

Speaking of steamed organs, you should have seen the cleaned and sliced beef hearts at the local Brookshire grocery store. They were so good they almost made me do an impulse buy instead of going for the beef brisket. Mmmmmm, good. :)

Oh Andrew would have done alright on that account if he'd been able to get down to me.

Miz Bertie had ordered fresh beef. It is amazing what you can cram into crockery when you have a lot of it.

I could hear raccoons giggling when I threw it over the side 24 hours later.

                      Marvin,

If I had not aimed high, you would have been rolling Tuesday night when you ran away. Please be my guest at a farb festival in Jefferson, TX on the first weekend of May. Tom and yours truly will be portraying conspicuous civilians and lurking around Tom's favorite Pepsi machine on the square during the parade, sham battle, etc. You would fit in well with us.

Come to think of it, we had a nice time-share arrangement with Marvin during ITPW. When there was work to do, Marvin was scarce, and found a reason to go over to the RLA side for a while. When there was hot food available, guess who showed up? It was as if Marvin had a camera mounted in a tree or on a mule. Yeah, that's it....a mule cam.

Seriously, Marvin was a lot of fun. This hobby needs more Marvins.

I agree, the hobby needs more Marvins. He is good. Real good! It was a pleasure interacting with him as the runaway slave and me as the stern but understanding sheriff of Natchitoches Parish that had to break it to him that when I said Colonel Walker was like a father to him, I meant like really a father! Marivin you, Company G having to pull the ox wagon, and the misery of the rain were the best parts of the event for me. Thanks, Marvin.
