Re: Living on the Line: Trench life at Petersburg
Hi all,
So far I have received a few registrations. Everything's coming together quite well but please send in those registrations sooner rather than later.
As Mark said the Wilkenson's regimental history of the 57th Massachusetts is one of the best around. And while I don't agree with all of his conclusions, his research is solid and his writing flows pretty well. If you're going to read just one book for this event, make sure its this one.
That said, I hope many participants will read up on the Petersburg campaign, an operation that is sadly neglected.
Earl Hess has recently published the best single volume study on the campaign. While his interest lies mostly with the fortifications, he includes a chapter on solider life in the trenches and good narratives on all of Grant's offensive campaigns.

Another good source on the campaign in Noah Trudeau's study. Pretty good overview of the 292 day siege but he only gets down to the brigade level.
Anyway this event is shaping up to be a good one to portray the 3rd bloodiest Federal regiment that served.
