That's great news! Count me in as the McDonalds' gardener again. I love these new longer events.

Edited to add: I know, there have always been longer events, but it just seems like there are more of them nowadays.

My GGGrandfather was working is way back through Ga around this time trying to get back from furlough to the unit in Charleston after being wounded at Chickamauga.

I would love to come portray a traveling soldier returning to war.

Would he have traveleld with just a blanket roll and haversack, and been re-issued accoutrements and rifle when he got back to camp?

Re: Westville, GA - Oct. 2010

The amateur, keepsake, documentary, "McClernand's Suckers - The Story of the 8th Illinois" is now completed. After more than 2 years, one computer crash, several file issue, patches galore and software issues, I have finally completed it. Most of the footage and photos were taken at "Encampment at Pittsburg Landing" in April of 2007, but still more were taken at various SCAR events. It is not meant to be some Academy Award winning documentary, but really a keepsake offered to those who attended the event and some friends. I am selling it for $15...$10 to cover cost and postage and $5 to go as seed money for "Struggles of Secession - Westville, GA 1863". The film is 30 minutes long with some bonus scenes (music video, Flag Presentation speech from Westville 1861, etc). Please mail checks or money orders to James Butler, 785 Somersby Dr, Dallas, GA 30157.
I hope you enjoy this keepsake and that you may learn a bit about this regiment.

            Regards,

I've decided to get myself a civilian impression together for this event. After hearing about last year, I definately don't want to miss part 2!

Re: Westville, GA - Oct. 2010

Ed Henry pointed me toward the threads about doing volunteer work on the buildings at Westville. A work weekend is planned for the last weekend in September '09. There will be two buildings to be worked on. Anyone willing to help should contact me - my email address is at the end of this message.

                1. The West cabin that served as the tavern in Sparks for Secession. The other half of the cabin has been cleaned out, the joists underneath inspected by our tavern-keepers extraordinaire, and it is ready for the work to commence. The flooring will be repaired, broken windows replaced, steps built on the back, and general shoring up. When these repairs are finished it will double the usable space in that building. For those willing to come out and work Ed has agreed to operate the tavern Fri & Sat. nights during the work weekend.

                2. The church inside the village - again, more window panes to replace, a rather bad leak in the roof to be repaired, and the outside painted. This building is in bad need of repair.

By limiting our labors to these two buildings it is greatly hoped we can finish what work needs to be done to both buildings during the time we'll be there, and not start several projects none of which can be completed in the time we have. The site management is happy to have the work done and will supply lumber, paint, etc. If we finish these projects, we can determine another project for those who wish to work on it early in the week for Struggles for Secession in 2010.

Anyone willing to help, please contact me so I can get you on the list to receive updates as they are sent out regarding the projects. We can arrive on Weds. afternoon in order to be ready to start work on Thursday morning and leave at whatever time you feel you need to on Sunday. The village will be closed to spectators on Sunday which will allow a real push in order to finish up both projects if need be. In the event we have more people than are needed to work on these two projects there is a great need for general cleaning throughout the village. You can reach me at thistledewbooks @ comcast.net

In regards to Struggles of Secession - Westville, 1863, we are doing extensive research and putting it in writing right now. We have some unque and exciting surprises for the 2010 event. We are updating the old website for the new event and the 'Event Description' has been update at:

Registration will not open until Dec 1st, 2009. But, if you want to start building a correct civilian impression, this may be the motivation you need to get started. Put away those ballgowns and fancy duds, because this event portrays the real struggles of living in a rural, Southern, yeoman-class town in 1863.

A teaser video can be viewed at:

Much more to come! We hope you will plan to be part of it.

                            Regards,
                            Jim Butler
