Re: Camp Jackson May 6-8, 2011

I am looking forward to this event to start the 150th years. Plus I will be retired from the USAF by then and I will be closer to home, so me taking the field would be much easier.

Not trying to step on Holler's toes, but Mike Kupsch and myself will also be raising a company of the Greys for this event. I believe that at this point, I will be company commander and Mike will be serving as orderly sergeant.

No matter which company you choose, please put it on the calendar. We'd like to give St. Louis an idea of an important aspect of her history.

I want to echo Capt Commers sentiments; place this on your calendar and attend. Mike and I were at the Camp Jackson Living History put on by Frank a few years back..was even held on a small portion of what is left of Camp Jackson. That was awesome..being able to do Camp Jackson on a larger scale is priceless!

I believe I will have to make the trip up from Jawja for this one in some capacity or another. You fellas make it tough on a man to decide!
Given whats being recreated with this one ,I am seeing alot of impression possibilities for a very interesting time and place in the war and in Mizzourah's craaazy history.

                I posted this on another thread about Camp Jackson, but I'll post it again here;

I am the Captain of the Washington Blues, a pre-war militia in St. Louis that was made up of almost all Irishmen. Unlike other pre-war militias in Missouri and within the city of St. Louis, the Washington Blues were established in 1857 and saw action on the Missouri/Kansas border before the Civil War.

Those who know me know that I will expect nothing but top authenticity. No cutting corners in my company. If you want to just do what's good enough to get buy, then this is not the company or impression for you. However, if you enjoy doing things right, and enjoy being in a company full of other like-minded men who take pride in their attention to detail and authenticity, then this IS the company for you.

Re: Camp Jackson, April 29-May 1, 2011-- uniforms and accoutrements--

Hello, Been doing a lot of research on Camp Jackson and Lyon.

Found that besides the 700 or so Missouri Militiaman encamped there, at least 1 to 2 thousand new recruits were hanging around the camp. These were issued if they wished to sign up with the 1st or 2nd Regiments, red cockades or Engineer Badges. It was said hundreds of these littered the ground when Lyons men showed up or were said to be on their way to arrest those who were planning on assaulting the Arsenal grounds.-- Many fled rather than be swooped by the Federal authorities.

The use of buff leather was prevalent in the Uniformed Militia Companies, but by 1852-55 much of this buff leather in Federal hands was ordered to be blackened by the Ordnance Bureau. I have not yet discovered what was actually stored in the Arsenal at St. Louis in terms of actual accouterments, cartridge boxes, belts, bayonets, etc. and how much was still buff (Mexican War and Earlier) and how much was new aka the 1855 model box and scabbard. The Germans under Lyon from all accounts were dressed in Civilian clothing and received arms from Arsenal stocks-- ( I have a list of firearms stored there).

The uniforms of the different Militia Companies are available from the St. Louis Historical Society-- they kept a log or someone kept a log of all the Militia companies in St. Louis going back to 1819. The Engineers under Basil Duke and the minute men wore a gray Zouave uniform.

Would love to come down to St. Louis to see you all'

Seein's one thing but we need militia men...and homeguardsmen.
The home guards men and pro-union men were predominately German.

At some point when I was young and impressionable I was greatly influenced by the late Frank Friel who filled my head with the adventures of the 1st Missouri. I have been hooked on the St. Louis Grays ever since.
However, with a name like Aufmuth I'm sure someone's turning over in their grave somewhere.
Registration will be up soon. Donations always welcome.... (and If you have a fax I'd like to have one...;)

Before going any further registration will open this fall. For now please ignore the registration page. This is still a work in progress Please do not register yet When the time comes there will be posts. Registration will be free but madatory; otherwise anyone could set up camp. Militia registratons will be limited to keep the proportions right.

This website is still a work in progress. However the guidelines are up and where available we provided pictures of the real people. We are trying to achieve a certain look especially in the Militia camp. Therefore, the guidelines were written to help anyone with the desire achieve that look. It is complete with "how to" ideas to convert old gear and suggestions on what to avoidFolks will need time to pull their impressions together. The link to the website is being posted now for that purpose. Just about anyone with the slightest desire will be able to meet the guidelines.

I figure most people here know Terry Sorchey, Holler, Mike Comer, Mike Kupsch, Nic Clark and Chris Talburt (organizing the Militia Cavalry). This battalion is inteded to be the "A-C" or "Adjunct" battalion. So, I figured most people on the A-C would be interested in supporting these men.
The only difference being that the A-C camp will be static, as was the original. For this reason proper tentage is invited and encouraged.

For those of you affiliated with the MCWRA the Turner Brigade and Holmes Brigade will be heading up the U.S. Volunteers and U.S. Regulars. Presently the 9th Missouri is heading up efforts to fill the 2nd Regiment Missouri Volunteer Militia.

                              Other developments:
Friday April 29th will be a school day and we are designing a curriculum for area schools that will be invited to attend tours of the camps. There will be roughly 12 stops and we will need volunteers to serve at the various vignettes.

There will be a battle on Sunday depicting something post Camp Jackson, 1861 and possibly with an M. Jeff Thompson twist.
