  • 1861 - Perilous times in South Union - Oct 21-23

Event: 1861 - Perilous times in South Union
    When: Oct 21-23, 2011
    Hosted by the WIG
Location: Shaker Museum at South Union, KY
    POC: Tripp Corbin - trippcor@bellsouth.net

1861 was a time of change and confusion for many, hope and excitement for others. This was certainly true for the citizens in and around Logan County Kentucky. From August to December, Infantry and Cavalry troops passed through Logan County heading from Bowling Green to Russellville gathering much need war materials for the fledging Confederate forces, trying to raise men for the impeding fight, and just moving military forces. Troops under the command of Generals Albert S. Johnston and Simon B. Buckner all moved through this area. Colonel Forest passed through South Union on the way to Camp Boone gathering men and horses for service in the Confederate Cavalry.

The WIG is hosting an event at the Shaker Museum at South Union Kentucky which will recreate the well documented movements and actions of the early Confederate forces that moved through this area from August to December 1861. We will be portraying infantry and cavalry forces. Civilians will be an important part of this event, bring the Shaker Village to life. We will need folks willing to portray Shakers. There will be some limited roles for non-shakers as well. As important as the Civilians are too the event, registration will be limited.

The exact portrayals are still being researched. Cavalry forces will be portraying at least in part of Col Forests men. For the infantry we are looking at a couple of Mississippi Units that Mr. Landrum has managed to find some good information on including uniform and equipment returns from this period.

A website is currently under development. Registration will open in January 2011.

From the journal of Eldress Nancy Moore, one of 3 leaders at the South Union Shaker community, published by Julia Neal 1861-1865:

"Aug 15 - The Rebel Colonel Forest with a company of Cavalry eighty six in number, passed thro' our village from above; they had several small secesh flags flying at their horses ears. We accomodated them with supper and breakfast, also provided them with plenty of fruit, Apples, Peaches, &c; without charge. They applied to Bluitt at the Depot for Corn, & to Yost at the Tavern for Oats."

      More to come.....

It's been several years since I last participated in an early war event at South Union. I think it was in 2004? Maybe 2005? Never the less... it was great event!

I'm looking forward to returning to South Union for this one.

What is going on at Shaker Village South Union this go around is a bit different than in years past. Pretty good military structure base and neat unit histories. I'm compiling all that and will have it out soon. But I'm looking forward to this.

If you have not visited South Union in a while, we welcome you back! The civilian side of things will be something you have never seen before, as we portray the Shaker's at South Union during the ACW 61'. As Mr. Landrum has said, this is not like any of the events that have taken place at South Union or Pleasant Hill. So be ready for something unique.

                  More from Nancy Moore's Journal:
Aug 1861 - "In the morning just before they started, the Colonel (Forest) called his men to come forward; and those who wished to leave him, and return to their homes, now was the time, their last and only chance, and requested them to walk aside. At this offer six of the men stepped aside, & the Colonel bemeaned them to the last degree. Some of our brethren who heard him, thought they could hardly have borne it."

Octr 29th " Generals Albert S. Johnston & S. B. Buckner sent their agents down to this neighbourhood to press horses & wagons." "John McCutcheon Junior one of our near neighbours together with his Mother Susan who are by no means friends to us, nor the profession we are of, and in principle strong secessionists accompies them around over our premises, to point out to them, where our wagons and horses might be found."

                    Tripp,

This will be a wonderful opportunity for cavalry and infantry to work together in a unique setting. The Shaker village at South Union is a fantastic place for this early war event and anyone who has not participated in anything at this location will be amazed at the realistic feel that it gives to the event. Those who have been there will know what I mean. Couple that with the documented activities that are planned and this should prove to be really something indeed!

We (cavalry) appreciate the invitation to this event and I have already started with communication to some in order to get it on the schedule for 2011.

If you are a serious authentic cavalryman and are considering attending this, and if I do not have your contact information, then I would ask that you please send me a p.m. so this can be established as I will sending out communication as time moves on.

                    Thanks,

                    Mark

Hmmmm....Mississippi units in south central Kentucky at this time, looks like 1st, 6th, and 23rd were in that general area in oct-nov '61. Maybe the 14th as well. I'll have to look. Good to see the MS units being represented.

                            Guys,
This should be a fun one. I am coordinating the turn over of the battalion with Matt right now but he is excited about continuing on with this event. Hopefully we will find some time to post more information soon.

Just so everyone knows what I'm up to...the other WIG event next year is the 150th Anniversary of Manassas that Tripp and I have been working on with Skip Owens. Since it comes first in July, it has had my attention. Also getting the staff roles filled in the WIG has been a priority. I'll get to this event soon enough and still have a year before it takes place, so not to worry. Great stuff is coming guys.
