Re: Uniform Guidelines for Company C

That was a question I had asked a while back. Both styles of hats are available for me to use either a 1860 style civilian rolled or I have a tricorn 1700 style also ?

The preferred style would be the 1860's era hat, with the sides rolled (folded) up on the Left, right and rear sides so as to create a Tri-Cornered appearance. What has been referred to as the 'Purves' hat is a style that would be acceptable.

For Company C just follow the event guidelines Let's NOT overthink this. Look at the original photos. Also read the event guidelines regarding hats:

"Headwear: BLACK slouch hat. Either looped up on the sides like a tricorn per Mississippi regulations, or with a side pinned up with a star for Mississippi, or just a plain black slouch hat"

        Looks simple enough to me.

Note: If some new research, accounts, letter, diary pops up between now and the event please do share it!

Re: Uniform Guidelines for Company C

In simple words, at a minimum, a black slouch hat. A black slouch hat with one side looped up and a white star on that looped up side is even better. Having all three sides lopped up to create a tri-corner appearance is primo.

            Dear friends,
In regards to the "tricorn" hat, if you are looking for an excellent resource that abounds with images of Mississippi troops donning this particular style, take a look at "For Dixie Land I'll Take My Stand Somebody's Darling: Images of Mississippi Confederates" by Grady Howell Jr.. This is an extremely rare book that I was afforded the opportunity to peruse courtesy of Tim Sheads at S&S in Gettysburg this weekend. If you can buy or borrow this book, you will find, as I've said, vast amounts of images of this style hat. The book shows hats of all kinds: low crown, flat topped hats, slouches with massively wide brims, etc..

One time a fellow artist told me, "Ryan, the pleasure is in the process, not the result". Have fun researching, fellas.

            Sincerest regards,
            Ryan D. W. Kiesel

Red Shirt updated Requirements and clarification.

"All other companies should wear a solid red wool flannel shirt with one white star on each collar. The shirt may have pockets or not, styles can vary, and really any red wool flannel shirt is acceptable." This means that the shirts should be WOOL not cotton. I have spoken with Kiev and other event organizers for further clarification on the shirts appearance. The shirts may or may not have a placket, also fireman bibs are prohibited! The shirts should have a fold down collar. Any trimming/piping blue, black, neon etc are not allowed and should be removed. The shirt buttons can be brass, japanned tin, china, or bone. Additionally, the shirts should be tucked into the trousers. These guidelines are simple and will provide a uniform look for our company.

I have been looking around for an appropriate bowie or toothpick. I really like the blades at Plowshare forge, but given a new shirt and trousers, my wife would be a bit put out. I do have an original Russell Green River blade. Blade is 13 3/4", overall is 19 1/3". The sheath is leather tasseled, and lends a sense of flair. Is this appropriate for Co. C?

Re: Uniform Guidelines for Company C

I have never seen a period image of a Confederate soldier with a sheath like that. That is more of a trade type Indian era sheath I believe in my somewhat limited knowledge of other periods.

I have some extra leather...if you want to send me the knife, and a small donation for work and return shipping, I can make you a simple sheath for the event. That way you can use the knife, and do not have to destroy your sheath.

                  PM me if interested.

Keep the knive sheath plain. No Indian War/Frontier Day/Trekking scabbards please. Thank you.

There are also a number of original tin knife scabbards you could consider having made. The one pictured at the link below is really neat. I'm looking forward to painting mine when it arrives.

                        Gents -

On the knife itself, the curve of the blade looks a lot like a butchering knife. rather than an 'outdoor tool'/fighting knife.

                        Cheers,

Re: Uniform Guidelines for Company C

                          Sir,
That looks to definitely be a knife for the preparation of flesh. It doesn't look to be a typical butcher's knife, as it does not look to be wider and heavier toward the tip. The weight of a typical butchers knife toward the tip make it easier for chopping and lobbing. This looks more like a knife for more exact slicing. I could be wrong, though. At any rate, the knife is fine to carry as a side knife/ fighting knife, as many butcher's knives were used. But I am in agreement with all that the sheath is a bit too "loud".

                          Respectfully,
                          Ryan D. W. Kiesel

For those awaiting their shirts from Justin Runyon, here is a preview. A really nice looking shirt, Mr. Runyon. Fits perfectly. Looking forward to being on the field with the rest of Co. C, the 2nd MS and Bee's Brigade!

Just to play devils advocate here, (although I know that this would be extremely inadvisable given sun/heat/etc.) would "no headgear" be acceptable (though highly discouraged).
