  • Imprisoned on the Frontier: the 8th US Infantry at Fort McKavett November 18-20 2011

This is a 150th cycle event commemorating the 6 month period from October 1861- April 1862 when Fort McKavett, Texas was occupied by Co. E, 1st Texas Mounted Rifles and served as a temporary prisoner of war camp for one of the six companies of the 8th US Infantry that was surrendered at the Battle of Adam's Hill, near San Antonio, on May 9, 1861. The companies of the 8th were divided amongst the former Federal outposts on the Texas frontier over the winter of 1861- spring of 1862.

A website has been created: https://sites.google.com/site/impris...efrontier/home and will be updated with more information shortly.

Registration is limited to 50 Federals and 60 Texans. This is a unique event representing a forgotten facet of Texas and Civil War history.

    Information about the Federals:
The prisoners that were distributed amongst the frontier posts during the Fall of 1861 were all enlisted men and NCO's, the officer's were kept in San Antonio. No weapons or accoutrements (other than to eat, cook, and carry your rations and to carry your personal effects) will be needed for this impression. By November 1861, these soldiers would have been wearing the same issue of clothing that they were surrendered in six months earlier. Please check the guidelines on the site....these weren't your fresh faced 90 day volunteers, these men were hardened veterans and a good mix of civilian clothing is appropriate.

    Information about the Texans:
The 1st Texas Mounted Rifles had been on campaign since March of 1861. These men were the first regiment that Texas created during the Civil War, and the commission to form the regiment was the first issued by the Confederate Government. The men that composed this regiment, in part, had experience in the ranging companies of the 1850's. By November 1861, attrition had begun to set in and the bi-weekly 85 mile patrols against the Lipan Apache and Comanche had taken it's toll. The 70-80 man strong companies had been whittled down to 50-60 men in strength.

Registration will open February 1, 2011.

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

Also, check out Fort McKavett's Facebook page to see some great pics of the historical interpretation events that Fort McKavett and the Texas Historical Comission hold out there.

Guys, the Ft. McKavett site is really great. Nice troop barracks, officers quarters and a Hospital. If you haven’t been there yet you owe it to yourself to consider coming to this event.

It is also a great site for civilian interaction as well. Had a blast at the event there last weekend.

The Wallick's were the post sutler during this period.

They will be represented during the event and allow the POWs and Texans, both, to purchase items and interact. As part of the registration, each participant will be given a few bills of period money to do with what they wish. Any other bills or sutler scrip can be purchased when registering.

I plan on volunteering as a POW for this event. The "prisoner minstrel show" scenario is fairly well documented and I hope to organize something like that to relieve the tedium.

I was at Fort McKavett this past week-end. It is an excellent site for star gazing. I look forward to a return visit to the fort and the nearby trading post.

I really like the sounds of this event so far and would love to see the Fort. To bad it is a 24 hour drive away. If one was able to fly in to be a POW what would be the recommended airport? A flight from Detroit to Austin would be about $277 which is not much more then I would spend to get to an event 10-14 hours away driving. Without a rifle, ect flying might not be out of the question. Perhaps a ride to and from could be arranged. Lots of time to plan and see!

                      Jeremy,
Austin and San Antonio are both about two hours away, Dallas-Fort Worth is roughly four. If any of the participants that are interested in attending would want to ship their clothing, etc. to Fort McKavett State Historic Site so as not to be a problem while flying, we would be able to hold it until the event and there is a federal post office 100 yds from the site so it can be shipped back to you afterward. Just a thought.

This is a very well maintained fort in some rugged, rural West Texas country. Traveling to the fort earlier this month I saw Commanche signs.....appeared to be 16 of them. It is best to travel in the daytime. I understand the Indians do not come near the fort, but the eagle and coyote depredations make it hard on small pets. Nevertheless, this should be a fun re-enactment.
