  • Independence Village, May 27-29.2011

As mentioned in the Boonesfield thread, our group will now be holding village events at a new site. Independence Village is located near Oakland, Illinois, about an hour south of Champaign, not far from the Indiana border. It doesn't appear on many maps, and it doesn't have a web page. Here's a map: http://www.celinea.com/d-187995631.htm

I think it will be easier to answer questions rather than to write a lengthy description, but I can tell you a few things right away.

First, if you are interested in attending, please sign up (or shoot me an email asking me to sign you up) for the Independence Village list. http://groups.google.com/group/independencevillage

That way you'll be kept informed of what's going on.

Second, at this writing we don't yet know what the village will charge for registration. Reg should be between $15 and $35 per person. This depends entirely on whether we have to buy our own event insurance, and I won't know that for another week or two. After we lost our previous site, it took some time to find a new venue -- so we appreciate your patience!

Third, the village is charming -- but rather rough. Those of you who were familiar with Boonesfield will find a much more rural, frontier, no-frills situation. The village has no electricity, no public restrooms (chamber pots, anyone?) and the four-, six- and eight-legged residents usual in such places. There's plenty of work for anyone with carpentry, gardening, or similar skills.

Fourth, the impressions are going to be much less refined than some may be used to; it's a rural, quiet, less prosperous place than Boonesfield, so expect to be wearing serviceable work clothes.

Finally, the scenario (so far) involves armed men in civilian clothing who visit Independence Village. The residents and the visitors will have to figure out each others' loyalties and allegiances. This scenario is based on an interesting suggestion by Hank Trent, and will need further details and refinement. Suggestions welcome.

    Thank you for your interest.

I look forward to the new event venue, although I do not look forward to reprising my former role.

Oakland is near Charleston. Charleston is home of Eastern Illinois University ( my alma matter), one of the seven Lincoln - Douglas Debates and the 1864 Charleston Riot http://castle.eiu.edu/~localite/cole...eston_riot.htm. This event was the one if not the only examples of blood being shed in Illinois that was connected with the war.

                Re: Independence Village, May 27-29.2011

Some of you may be aware of the old Boonesfield Village events that took place until recently outside of St. Louis. While that venue is no longer available, there has been a new venue selected to continue immersion civilian events just outside of Charleston, Illinois. The first event scheduled for the site will be May 27-29 of this year.

We are planning a series of events timed to the 150th cycle that would start this May with a scenario based around a rural Illinois village talking about the crisis embracing the country, culminating in a group of men from the village and surrounding area leaving to enlist in the war effort. Future events are yet to be determined but will follow the cycle of life in a Northern farming community through 1865 and the return of its sons from war.

Details and research are still being hashed out, but if you are interested in attending the event, please let me know. The scenario as detailed would call for the men to attend in civilian-only attire and prepared for an immersion experience recalling life in east-central Illinois in 1861. NO MILITARY CLOTHING ALLOWED. The area was predominantly rural, so with small village occupations aside, the majority of the men would be farmers or working in trades related to agricultural support. There are houses and dwellings available to sleep and cook in, but dining accommodations are still being worked out. Again, things are still in the early stages, but this looks to be a very exciting series of events developing very close to home for most of us. Please contact for further details if you are interested. For initial reading for some background, please consider looking at Sugar Creek: Life on the Illinois Prairie by John Mack Faragher, as well as Testament: A Soldier's Story of the Civil War by Benson Bobrick (not directly related to our exact scenario, but the book is based on research on a soldier from Coles County, Illinois, where Independence Village is located).

Again, this will be an immersion event with no modern intrusions on site, and no modern anachronistic activities or impressions allowed.

That's the kicker... will they allow horses on site??? Illinois is funny in that way... Not at any state historic park. Ft. Massac or Ft. de Chartes...

Well, this is a privately owned site, so the owners can make their own rules. I was told yesterday that as long as Coggins papers are in order, and horse-apples disposed of properly, the owners would enjoy having horses at events.

There is water available on site, both in the creek and via spigot. Feed etc should be provided by participants.

                          Re: Independence Village, May 27-29.2011

Just a quick note to let everyone know that we now have 25 adults and 10 children committed to the event, with about 4 more adults trying to sort out their schedule. That's not counting those men who will be traveling to the village to muster in, because they won't be living in the houses.

If everyone comes we'll be pretty close to capacity, so anyone who's thinking of coming, this would be the moment to let us know. We're treating this on a first-come, first-served basis. We don't yet have a specific registration deadline, because the owners are still sorting out the insurance issues. The moment we have that clarified we'll post a registration form, fee, and deadline.

At this time it's worth reiterating that this village has no modern amenities of any kind, and the cabins are primitive. For those who need some minimum level of comfort that includes nearby bathrooms, cell phones, cots, absence of spiders, etc, I'm afraid this would not fit the bill. Please be prepared for a rigorous, challenging environment. Again, this is an immersion event -- no modern objects (including cameras and modern food containers of any description) and no modern talk.

Only you can know whether that sounds like your cup of tea or an uncomfy situation.

At this time we have enough civilians, so we're taking names for the waiting list. Details about registration will be posted shortly. We can still take a few gentlemen, if they're willing to sleep in outbuildings or on porches.

                              Thanks!
