At the 2011 Battle of Resaca on May 20-22, the SE Coalition of Authentic Reenactors (SCAR) and the Armory Guards (AG) will be hosting a Federal adjunct at the event.

AG Company - 12th Missouri - XV Corp, 1st Div,. Woods' 1st Bgde
Regimental histories and discussion will be posted further here.
* Impression guidelines based on historic data
Guidelines will be posted here and are currently available to those who request them via email.
* Established organization and structure with reasonable goals for numbers
Two companies of 20-40 men each.
* Activities outside the event standard schedule that add value to the event for the participant
Original ground, a planned battlefield tour march, soldier life demos for the public, Seperate,
campaigner camp, Enforced min standards, school of the NCO, recruit drills.
* Traditional EBUFU activities: rations, guard, drill, some level of immersion even if temporary (i.e., overnight picket or short march, based on historic actions of course!)"

26th Iowa Volunteer Infantry
Action at the Battle of Resaca, GA
Report of Adjutant General of Iowa, 1865, Vol. 2, pages 1165 to 1168 inclusive. History
of the Twenty-sixth Iowa Infantry for the year 1864.
On April 30th, the regiment rejoined the brigade at Woodville and, on May 1st, commenced
the march towards Chattanooga, where it arrived on the 6th marching thence by way of Gordon
Mills and through Snake Creek Gap to Resaca, Ga., where, on May 13th, it again encountered
the enemy and lost one man killed and two wounded. On May 14th, the regiment was ordered to
attack a force of the enemy in its front, on the opposite side of a creek. The officers and men of
the Twenty-sixth Iowa gallantly advanced, waded the stream under a heavy fire, and drove the
enemy from the field. This was the Twenty-sixth Iowa's contribution to the Union victory at
Resaca, and was the second of its many conflicts with the enemy during the great Atlanta
campaign. The loss sustained by the regiment in this battle was two killed and twenty-one
wounded, four of whom died a few days later. The enemy evacuated his works at Resaca during
the nights of the 15th and 16th of May, and the Union troops followed in swift pursuit, arriving
at Kingston, Ga., on the 19th.

Perhaps the most significant development of the day came not from Camp Creek nor the Union left flank but along the front before Resaca proper. Polk's Corps had been skirmishing with McPherson's all day there. At 5:30 p.m. McPherson was ordered to launch a full-scale attack on Polk. This was done to prevent Polk from sending any troops northward to aid in Hood's attack or perhaps to exploit any thinning of the Southern line if the Army of Tennessee had already sent men north. A great deal more was accomplished, however, as summarized by Bill Scaife: "…Charles R. Woods' 1st Brigade pushed across the creek, the 26th Iowa Regiment in advance and the 12th Missouri Regiment protecting the flank. Woods was supported on the right by Giles A. Smith's 1st Brigade of Morgan L. Smith's 2nd Division - the with 57th Ohio, under the command of Colonel Americus V. Rice, leading the skirmishers. Encouraged by thousands of 'hurrahs' from Logan's XV Corps on the hills to their rear, Woods' and Smith's men ascended the slope and established a lodgement before dark. By daylight on May 15, Logan's troops had secured the position, while Polk reformed his Confederate line through the cemetery just west of the railroad, in the very outskirts of Resaca. Since Federal artillery could then command the railroad bridge across over the Oostanaula River, Johnston ordered a new pontoon bridge erected a mile upriver, hopefully out of range of the guns." (Scaife p. 30) He also ordered Polk to retake the hills. Three spirited Confederate assaults upon the positions, however, came to nothing. Polk's men retreated and strengthened their lines during the night.

May 14 ended inconclusively. The main Federal assault of the day was badly mismanaged and soundly repulsed. Ultimately, Judah would be dismissed from command for his part in the debacle. Polk's men have been driven from key positions overlooking Resaca, threatening Johnston's ability to retreat. Meanwhile, on the northern part of the battlefield, Johnston and Hood were encouraged by the destruction wrought upon the exposed Northern left flank. Despite being unable to accomplish all that was hoped for, that evening Johnston ordered the attack be resumed the next day. Soon news would reach him that would cause him to temporarily countermand that order. (See Lay's Ferry for details.)

"At Resaca, at Dallas, at Kenesaw, in the engagements before Atlanta, near the left of our lines on the 22d, and near the right on the 28th, during the siege, at Jonesboro, and at Lovejoy—in all these battles and operations and the grand manoeuvres accompanying, the Twenty-sixth Iowa was behind no other regiment in duty and valor. It lost about eighty of its members, including several officers slain and wounded, during the campaign. From Resaca to Lovejoy in Georgia, the dead of the gallant Clinton Regiment lie buried; from Resaca to Lovejoy the blood of its wounded officers and men was spilled."

Gents,

Here is the Final info for the Resaca federal Adjunct - 26th Iowa / SCAR company effort. Map and further details were emailed out to those who registered. We will post a guard at the trail head with a lantern (the trailhead is at the parking lot).

- Start drinking water a few days before the event and during the event.
- Please try to arrive by 6:30 pm friday night for drill/inspection (please read the atatched uniform guidelines). We WILL have a drill friday evening before dark (7 pm), please make all efforts to be at the drill.
- Please report to the Orderly Sgt upon arrival.
- Rations will be issued at 8 pm (to those who pre-paid).
- Please bring 40-60 rounds and caps (4 wing caps only)
- If you can not arrive by 6:30 pm fri., please email me at unionguy1@comcast.net
- NCO School is after morning colors/battalion drill in the adjunct camp. Anyone from any unit can attend. 1 Hour length. NCO candidates, novice or experienced NCOs only (recruits should attend the last 30 minutes to receive training from the NCO trainees.). Please sign up with me as well via email (I have limited materials). Candidates should know Manual of Arms, School of the Solider and Load in Nine Time.
The NCO School instructors are Presentation: Jim Butler, Sean Cooper / Hand-On: Bruce McDonald, Greg Deese.
- Walk-ons are fine for this as well. If you are still planning to come as a walk-on, please let me know as well as we cant build a roster without knowing who is coming.
- Please maintain a period camp. First person is not mandatory (but be polite of others).
- Those getting loaner gear should report to the 2nd Sgt Bruce McDonald to sign-out loaner gear. Please return it in the same condition issued.
- Please encourage the public to visit our camp and offer them common soldier/CW history demonstrations.
- Have a good time!

We will also be working with the Armory Guards, (12th Missouri) in the adjunct camp.
