Western Federal Blues for AC
Gentlemen –
We are seeking Federal men to attend Manassas with the Western Federal Blues. Our impression will be that of the 2nd Regiment, Ohio-Infantry (90 day regiment.) The regiment was made up of pre-war militia and regular citizens. They left Columbus, Ohio in mid-April to Washington City. They spent some time in Pennsylvania and then went into camp at Washington. They engaged at First Manassas in Tyler’s Division, Schenck’s Brigade, Army of Northeastern Virginia.
We’ve done considerable research to find a Union regiment whose impression would not require outrageous investments of uniforms and accouterments.
The regimental history and an article regarding the appearance of the 2nd Ohio at Manassas may be found on www.westernfederalblues.org
The Blues will provide a ration program as well as alter-ego program for those who participate with us at the event. We will be portraying a regiment on the march and will participate in all the activities appropriate to a military force on campaign as well as guard mount, inspections etc.
Please refer to the following guidelines for uniforms, ordnance and accouterments.
UNIFORM
Jackets: Fatigue blouse with plain eagle buttons.
Trousers: Federal Issue Trousers preferred dark blue
Suspenders of civilian pattern, cotton webbing, canvas, or ticking with either button holes or leather tips with tin or brass buckles (no nickel plated metal).
Shirt: Red Flannel or Federal Issue Domet Flannel
Hat: Federal Issue Forage Cap or Hardee Hat. Hat Brass should be highly polished. Havelocks would be present in limited numbers.
Footwear: Brogans preferred sewn but pegged acceptable
Drawers: Military issue or civilian style in cotton or wool flannel if worn
Eyewear and Glasses:
Spectacles were not a common item amongst Civil War soldiers. Try to be without them during the event. If you have to have glasses they must be of the period. No modern glasses may be worn.
Civilian Attire: Very limited if any
General Appearance: The 2nd Ohio was proclaimed as one of the best drilled and sharpest regiments in the army at that time. They should appear in the field as “spit and polished.”
ORDNANCE
M1842 Musket .69 caliber Harpers Ferry or Springfield Arsenal
1853 Enfield Rifle-Musket .577 caliber
M1855 Rifled Musket .58 caliber Springfield Arsenal
M1861 Rifled Musket .58 caliber Springfield Arsenal
ACCOUTERMENTS
Cartridge Box – Federal Issue for 69 or .58 caliber weapon with appropriate tin.
Cap Pouch – Federal Issue M1850
Waist Belt – Federal Issue
Belt Plate – Federal Issue US on the face – No OVM or OVI plates
