                      Captain, Neal, and whoever,

This is Phil McBride, who chatted with you a few times at Port Hudson two weeks ago. I was the Red River Battalion adjutant. Son Ben and I would like to join up with your company for the Manassas event. Ben lives in Washington DC and would join us at the reenactment. Have you yet posted any uniform info online?

                      Regards,

If the Calhoun Rifles (what-ever a Calhoun is, sounds like a breed of dog) had a Commander who was a "Dandy"... The WIG has picked the right man for the job!!!...;)

Has anyone ever figured out what a "Calhoun" is? I talked to Troy and it may be a hound dog that hunts gator down in CalcAshaew Parish.

Maybe reference to John C. Calhoun..."March 18, 1782 – March 31, 1850) was a leading politician and political theorist from South Carolina during the first half of the 19th century. A powerful intellect, Calhoun eloquently spoke out on every issue of his day, but often changed positions. Calhoun began his political career as a nationalist and proponent of protective tariffs; later, he switched to states' rights, limited government, nullification and free trade. He is best known for his intense and original defense of slavery as a positive good, for his promotion of minority rights, and for pointing the South toward secession from the Union.........Although Calhoun died nearly 10 years before the start of the American Civil War, he was an inspiration to the secessionists of 1860–61. Nicknamed the "cast-iron man" for his determination to defend the causes in which he believed, Calhoun supported states' rights and nullification, under which states could declare null and void federal laws which they deemed to be unconstitutional. He was an outspoken proponent of the institution of slavery, which he famously defended as a "positive good" rather than as a "necessary evil".[2] His rhetorical defense of slavery was partially responsible for escalating Southern threats of secession in the face of mounting abolitionist sentiment in the North."

                              Just a thought.
                              Bob Roeder

"I stood for a time and cried as freely as boys do when things hurt most; alone among the dead, then covered his face with an old coat I ran away, for I was alone passing dead men all about as I went". Pvt. Nathaniel C. Deane (age 16, Co D 21st Mass. Inf.) on the death of his friend Pvt. John D. Reynolds, May 31, 1864.
