  • BIG White Star

I just received one of Craddock's white sewn stars. It is a fine piece of work. This afternoon, with some effort, I stitched down all five points of the star to the front of my black slouch hat. Man, that big white rascal seems to glow up there over my forehead. Looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of us marching under these stars, and a big thanks to Pat for his starry project.

      Re: BIG White Star

Your question should be a 2 or 5 letter direct answer, but, first I have to stress I pulled out every book on the shelf that might have photos of a Mississippi soldier wearing a big star on his hat. None to be found. But I did finally find a photo of a Texan artilleryman wearing a round topped black slouch hat with a medium brim, like mine, and with a big white cloth star on the front of the crown, and it was pointed up. So, after standing in the mirror pondering up or down, I finally said to myself, "I'm a Texan playing a Mississippian, so the star is going up."

        Re: BIG White Star

OK, I'm hogging my own thread, but I've been sent a photo of a soldier in the 15th MS and he is wearing a big wide brim slouch hat with a big white star on the underside of the brim. I have a book on Texas soldiers that has a similar photo of a star on the bottom side of the wide brim. In both photos, if the brim were to be pinned up on that side, the star would be pointed up and in the obvious spot for an emblem. Also if you go to IceMan's profile on this forum and check out his album of Louisiana soldiers there is a fine portrait of a man wearing a black wide brim hat with a big white star pointing up and on the pinned up side of the brim. If the brim was unpinned, the star would be visible under the brim as in the two photos I mentioned. So, if anyone cares, there is a little more rationale for stitching a star pointed up on our black hats, tricorn or not.
