I was afraid that the accounts would say "brand new Springfields".

Sooo, which model of "brand-new Springfield" is the order of the day for this stroll? I have an M1842 that needs attention to correct the finish on the stock, but if the original cast was carrying M1861 Springfields maybe I better make other plans for a long arm.
Yours &c,

Who was hoping a blued barrel Tower would be acceptable ...
I think before people begin to have the conversation on what to have for the event we should wait until the guidelines are posted. They did have 1861 Springfields but every event I have ever been to always has a 1,2,3 preference for weapons.
The 12th Iowa had Enfields. Most of the other Iowa regiments had conversion muskets at Shiloh.
By July 1863 most if not all Iowa regiments had '61 Springfields.

Fellers, I know most of you are probably like me, and you especially enjoy having the right weapon for the right impression. However, I seriously doubt that if any of us show up with smoothbores, Enfields, or some other weapon appropriate to Federal infantry at Shiloh that we'll be drummed out, at least that's the impression I have gotten so far in talking to some folks. As for me, I was really hoping for a Federal unit that was armed with smoothbores and uniformed with state-issued shell jackets and forage caps or civilian slouches. However, that is just my early war preference.

Boyd describes the men carrying in his words - "a mule load" - which included 2 blankets, extra clothes, overcoat, and haversack. They recieved brand new Springfields on March 26. He also mentioned that many of the men gave out during their 4-5 mile march through St. Louis to their camp there at Benton Barracks on March 20th, that being their longest march at that point in time. That is just a little over two weeks before Shiloh. It seems these guys were certainly not "campaigners" at this point, but the epitomy of fresh fish all the way around. I apologize again if the info was repetitive, hopefully it is useful for some guys.
I would be willing to bet that the "mule load" was thinned out quite a bit in the days following that march. I sure hope the research bears that out as I'd hate to tote all that around
You know, I knew this... If anything, from playing Battleground Shiloh. There was at least a brigade's worth of independent regiments that filtered into the battle, including the 15th Iowa. This is going to be a fun impression.
Was Crocker's Brigade the one that got chewed up at the Hornet's Nest, in Wallace's Division? I know at least two Iowa regiments got captured there, almost en masse.
The Iowa regiments that were captured at the Hornets Nest were the 8th, 12th, and 14th Iowa. All were part of W.H.L. Wallace's division. None of these regiments ever served with the Crockers brigade, which consisted of the 11th, 13th, 15th, and 16th Iowa. The 11th and 13th Iowa fought at Shiloh as part of Hare's Brigade of McClernand's Division. The 15th fought pretty much on its own hook, and the 16th was sent to Prentiss but most of it escaped the Hornets Nest.
Just so you all know, registration will open on June 15th. Tell your pards to be ready since slots are limited on the paddle wheeler. The website will be up in a week or so with history, uniform guidelines, etc., but registration will not be open until June 15th. This will give everyone a chance to be ready to register as I suspect this one will reach cut off fast. I'll post the website as soon as it's ready.

When I first started re-enacting(1991) the regiment I portrayed was the 12th Iowa Co.C. The best part was one of the authors of the book University Recruits 101 lived across the street from out unit leader. Hours on end I would go and talk to Roger about the 12th and Shiloh. His story is awesome! While working at Upper Iowa University in the 1950's he was searching in the university's attic. He found two "trunks". One was Company C field desk. It was FULL of morning reports, and anything else you could imagine. In 1993 I went to Upper Iowa and looked at the desk. It was on the floor under a pile of drama supplies. I told Roger this and he called Upper Iowa mad as hell. I did contact Tim Smith at Shiloh and they tried to get the desk but UI would not let it go. The other trunk was full of Philo Woods stuff from the war. Haversack, blanket, Enfield rifle, artifacts from Shiloh and Vicksburg, original images. The 12th also had one of the only color bearers to make it through the whole war. Henry Grannis went from Ft.Henry/Donleson to Spanish Fort without being killed or wounded. At one point while at Spanish Fort a shell exploded right in front of him and many feared he was dead. But he ran out of the smoke!

Not to be impatient, but does anybody know what the 15th Iowa were wearing at Shiloh, and also what arms they were carrying? Since we're under a year out from this impression, I'd like to start preparing now, if possible.
Bob, the guidelines are being adjusted currently. It will be the "preferred, accepted, not accepted" type of guidelines. And to get as many guys on board as we need, there will be some concessions. I can't require guys to spend $900 for a new coat and rifle. The had Springfield Rifled Muskets, don't know if it was '55s or '61s. They got a second suit of clothes a few days before they came south from St. Louis, but it doesn't state exactly what that we've found. The website will be built and up in about 10 more days.
Robert, I'd love to have music, but if all I can get is one paddle wheeler, they either will be at the landing or not involved. I have 450-480 guys wanting on board and have room for 280 currently. And that's with two trips. I've got a 7.5 hours river operation to transport everyone currently. This is growing fast. More to come.

"There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
So next year this guy asks me, "What did you do on your birthday?"
I respond, "Got dressed up in blue wool, went to Tenn, rowed a boat gently down the Tennessee River, got off and marched a few miles, save Grants arse and went to bed." You?
Guy looks at me funny, shakes his head and walks away. ;-)
