  • Mississippi Rifles

Per the WIG event regs, Mississippi rifles are clearly allowed (and in fact encouraged for several companies).

Arms: Smoothbore, percussion muskets are preferred, i.e. U.S. Model 1842 or earlier models converted to percussion (any style Cone in barrel, drum or bolster). NO flintlocks in the Second! If you have a U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi Rifle” that one of the rifle carrying companies, Cos. A and B, may borrow, WE NEED THEM. Or if you are in Cos. A and B, we prefer you to carry a U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi Rifle.” We know there are guys who do not have a smoothbore musket, so if all you have is an Enfield Rifle, that is acceptable. U.S. Model 1861 and later Springfields are discouraged. Please bring the appropriate bayonet for your longarm. Side arms are not permitted to be carried by enlistedmen. Carrying a fighting knife is encouraged and permitted by the event.

As I'm loaning out my .69 conversion to a new guy and carrying my Mississippi, I'm wanting to check in advance that those of us carrying the feared, dreaded rifles to a big-tent, mainstream gig won't run into a wall on this issue.

With a 21 hour trek each way I'm wanting to do due diligence on this ahead of time.

    Thanks,
    Fred Baker

    Re: Mississippi Rifles

Fred- Reached out to our superiors on this one and recieved the guidance. We are to have those with Miss Rifles in the front rank per the regulations of the event. We will make adjustments as needed, and this will NOT impact the Regiment. Thanks for bringing this up and hope this reassures you that it shouldn't be a issue.

      Skip,

Thanks much! Unlikely that there are enough numbers but at the theory level- the guys in Co's A and B who have the 'Ississippi as their preferred piece, obviously the whole company can't all be front rank...

        Re: Mississippi Rifles

That should not be a problem for Company B, for half the company was armed with smoothbore muskets and the other half with Mississippi Rifles.

        All the best,

          Re: Mississippi Rifles

Just because I'm curious, is there preference between the earlier .54 version of the M1841 or the re-bored .58s with Bayonets?

            Re: Mississippi Rifles

            Sam,
I you look under the Company A folders you will see a post on regulation and research by the North State Rifles. Looking at what Mississippi Had prior to the war it was a split between those of the 41's pattern and those in 55's pattern/altered 41's to 55's. A quick look at this great research, looks to be either pattern is acceptable. Looks like those that were avaliable in the 55' or rebored pattern did have saber bayonets, based on the numbers giver vs saber bayonets issues seems to mirror.

just my observations on the research conducted.
