  • Barracks Preparation underway

    Prior to whitewashing

In preparation for the event, the barracks that the prisoners will sharing with some of the Texan guards is currently undergoing some restoration work. Mortar work and a new coat of whitewash on the internal walls will match the new coat of whitewash that recently been finished on the other 17 buildings on site.

Constructed in 1852, Barracks #4 is split into 4 distinct rooms. Rooms 1 and 2 will have the correct antebellum double bunks. Room 4 will if time will allow (if not it will have the iron bedsteads pictured below)

The antebellum double bunks are wide enough to accomodate two men on the bottom bunk and two men on the top bunk, sleeping head to toe side by side. These will be patterned off of specs forwarded to the site by Bill Rodman of surviving originals at Fort Mifflin, PA. I will be making these over the course of the summer and will post images as they are constructed.

    [HOUSTON] TRI-WEEKLY TELEGRAPH, October 28, 1863,

    Wanted.

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

I am excited for this event. The site sounds outstanding and Cody and his colleagues are clearly putting a significant amount of time, energy, and resources into the ground and facilities.

I hope that any folks on the fence about attending will opt to be there.

    Thanks for the update Cody.

      Cody,

Just to give credit where credit is due. I took the specs for the double bunk from an original at Fort Mifflin, along the Delaware River, in Philadelphia, PA.

If all goes right I plan on taking a month long vacation from the real world to hitchhike, walk, and freight to this. If I dont end up in jail those bunks will probabally end up being the most comfortable thing I have slept in for a few weeks. Pumped on this event.

            Re: Barracks Preparation underway

Room #1 was completed (except for antebellum bunks) last week. Here are some updated photos. This room will have 5 double bunks in it sleeping 20 soldiers.

Now that our large annual event is over, we can start construction on the bunks. Photos will be posted as the rooms are completed.

Hope to see ya'll in November,

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I'm so working hard to get my leg in shape for this event!
Great pics, trying to pick out a bunk for myself already!

This is one event I'm looking forward to, thanks for all the effort in getting it together for us.

Here's a sneak peak of the double bunks that the POWs will be sleeping on. This one unit would have slept 4 men: 2 on top and 2 on bottom.

The side rails have been dry fitted (but not fully seated in the mortices) in the photo so the slats could be nailed in place and everything kept square. The slats of the lower bunk haven't been nailed in place yet.
