  • Pickett's Mill Federal Living History, June 1-3, 2012

What: “Pickett’s Mill 5th Kentucky Federal Living History”

    When: June, 1-3, 2012

Where: Pickett’s Mill State Park near Dallas, Ga.

    Who: Armory Guards

    POC: Herb Coats - Menion687 at aol.com

The Plan: To follow up the 2010 Confederate Pickett’s Mill “Real Time” Living History, the Armory Guards, with the conjunction with the Pickett’s Mill State Park staff will be hosting a Federal only Living History at the park in June. Participants will be portraying elements of the 5th Kentucky Infantry of Hazen’s Brigade as they maneuvered throughout the area to attempt to flank the Confederate Army of Tennessee.

This is NOT a static living history, and participants will be moving throughout the park following the footsteps of the 5th Kentucky. The actual movements will be followed as closely as possible throughout the day, into the evening on Saturday, and then finally falling back after the Confederate Night assault into Sunday. For those who have been not been to Pickett’s Mill, being fit to march up and down ridges and into ravines is of the essence.

This living history plus the Confederate-centric living history from 2010 will be the focus of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Pickett’s Mill in 2014.

More information and a stand alone website link will be posted here when the time comes.

    Thanks

Can't wait!! I really enjoyed the LH that the AG put on at the park in June 2010. I'll make it a point to be there.

Sorry to have to miss this one, but alas... my young Bride and I will be on our own wilderness adventure as we celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. And no... none of you can join us!

FYI, I spoke with James Wooten this past weekend. We'll have two portrayals to focus on for the living history. The aforementioned 5th Kentucky from Hazen's Brigade and later in the event the 9th Kentucky of Fredrick Knefler's Brigade. This, like the Armory Guard's previous living history will be history heavy with information regarding specific actions being recreated and discussed as the day goes on.

Yes it will be hot, humid, and you will have to go up and down hills. Expect to sweat like the original boys did!

Shoot, Would have been nice if it was the 6th KY. Could have brought our colors out for this one. Will still be proud to show up for our Kentucky brethren. I'll have to go back and read about the movements of Hazen and his boys. From what I remember, they were really left out to dry at Pickett's Mill. Actions were almost criminal in my book. Will be a nice weekend.

I portrayed the 5th Ky at the Mill more than once, many moons ago, and retraced their steps to the day and the hour. ;) Also spent some time portraying the 17th Ky there as well, they were last off of the field.

Paul, from what I've been reading here and there, a lot of Blue Boys were left out in the ravines to "dry". Thanks for the comments folks. The kit guidelines will be posted within the info website. That and registration will open up later this year more than likely.

I recently spoke to the ranger at the Mill. The impressoins are still the 5th Kentucky Infantry, and later in the day, the 9th Kentucky Infantry, US. Registration will open soon after the new year. If you've been to an AG living history like the previous Pickett's Mills, Lookout Mountain, Jekyll Island, etc you know what to expect.

Herb, another chance to sweat wearing blue at Pickett's Mill?

                          An update,

I spoke with the park's ranger this past weekend, and we are working on getting as close on the park site to where the Federals marched towards the ravine, mill site, and cornfield. I'm sure the humidity and bugs will be awaiting all of us in June.

Also, there will be a website with event guidelines, a short history, points of contact, and the registration form.

Again, make sure your shoes are in good repair. The hills and ridges love to eat them up.
