  • Company C, "Quitman Southrons", 6th Mississippi - Shiloh 2012

Gents, sorry the Independent Rifles' info about Shiloh is in so many posts. We will have our own sub-folder for this effort up shortly. Please be patient and we'll get out the info as quickly and as organized as possible.

I am raising a company, of which the Independent Rifles is the core. We will be the color company of the C.S. campaigner battalion. Company C, Quitman Southrons, were raised in Leake County, Mississippi and mustered into state service at Carthage, Ms on July 21, 1861 (date sound familiar?!). Company C was mustered into Confederate service at Grenada, Ms on August 24, 1861.

Company C uniform regulations are plain C.S. enlisted frock coats made from gray or tan jean, cassimere or satinett. Other option for coats are civilian sack coats or untrimmed commutation jacket, but Frock is what we are wanting if possible. Matching trousers if possible or at least close in color. Trousers are to have a black tape stripe down each leg. (Wooded Hamlet/Needle and Thread will be best source for this. 1/2' black tape stripe). Kepis or slouch hats. NO FEDERAL items, other than leathers, but no US plates on boxes. Coverlets, carpet blankets and CS or civilian painted ground cloths. Tin drum or wood drum canteens and CS painted or unpainted haversacks (Andrew Martin is a great source for haversacks and ground cloths). You know the other does and don'ts.

Our Orderly Sergeant is Brian DeRoaches.

Depending on number of men registered, Russ Dykes will be our Lt.

If you want to fall in with our company at Shiloh, please send me at e-mail at rambling_irishman@hotmail.com

Thank you and I look forward to serving with you all in the field.

Russ Dykes will be our Lt and if numbers keep rolling like they are, then he will be a very tired Lt!

Are we looking for more blanket rolls or knapsacks? I was thinking along the lines of an I&C wood frame knapsack but I don't know much about early war Mississippi troops.

        Thank You!

Ryan, either is fine for our company. Bedroll or knapsack. However, if its a bedroll, it doesn't need to be a huge roll that you cannot function in!

Sounds good to me. Yet another excuse to purchase the long awaited "other" knapsack besides my double bag!

Ryan: If you're going to shell out the coin, I would get a Mexican War softpack. From my observation, these things are really under-represented in the hobby, despite their prevalence esp. in Confederate armies. I've also found that they're rally low maintenance, esp. if you're a smaller guy.

                  Christopher -

I can second that. I am not a big guy, and I tote a MW single-bag (Kibbler version) softpack. It is very comfortable, and has plenty of room, even for a little brown water and a hanging mucket, and does not have the trigonometric assortment of straps and trusses. The straps are plenty stout enough to tie a blanket or overcoat on top with some leather thongs and save some extra room in the pocket. It is especially handy in the summer, as it doesn't trap the heat against you on the move like the roll tends to do. It lets the wind evaporate the sweat/moisture on your chest and torso, and hangs low enough on your back that you're not constantly bunging your head or musket against the roll.

Most of the boys back then were nowhere near the size of the well-fed giants of today so I can see why they were so popular. They are great and simple packs.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm thinking I'll prob end up getting both an I&C and a Mexi War. Plenty of time before the event to save up some money. I like versatility.

                      Just to have a post just for this . . . .

For Company C, the REQUIRED items in addition to the guidelines, are as follows.

1/2 black tape stripe down trouser seams
NCO's will have black tape rank stripes on sleeves
Plain, sheet brass belt plate on a black leather belt

Justin - where are you getting your 1/2 inch black tape?

                          I would try

Always had great luck with these folks. If memory serves me, it takes 2.5 yards per pair of trousers. But, I would measure your trouser seam to make sure!
