  • Wallick's sutler store

I've received a couple of emails about the event that concern the sutler's store. This post is going to serve as a reminder that all of the proceeds of the sutler's store will be donated to the site after the event is over.

Below are photos of a very small sampling of the items that will be stocked in the store. All of these are being made especially for this event.

Pipe tobacco with wax paper inner bags and period labels in place. Also showing one style of matches that will be available.

Paper needle case. These will have the label pasted in the blank spot on the front of the package that will state what size and type of needle is in the case. The packages are made of a cotton paper and are color fast.

Pistol cartridge packages with combustible paper cartridges, the packages will be manufactured like the originals with the pull wire and shellac'd paper over the wooden internal block. .44 calibre belt pistol cartridges also being made.

Enamelled pasteboard snuff boxes, varied graphics all dated pre-1860.

Several styles of bone pipe tampers carved by hand, this being one of the more exotic ones.

Japanned pipe tobacco tins, fishing hooks, clay pipes, foodstuffs, condiments made from period recipes, socks, ginger beer, and other 'beverages' will be on hand as well.

Beside these items, the sutler store will also carry a good assortment of 1861 specific propaganda stationary and covers as well as some that are Texas specific. Correct postage stamps will also be available. The sutler's store will double as a functioning post office during the event.

If you are interested in Texas history, Trans-Miss Civil War history, Antebellum Regulars, or historic preservation then send in your registration and don't forget to visit the sutler's store!

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

Fantastic work Cody. Those are some top quality Sutler items. Those are some of the best items I have seen avaible at events in recent memory! Great job! to you.

I would be remissed if I did not compliment some of our other top quality Sutlers who do amazing jobs at events. Mrs Crabb at Ezra Barnhouse and Joe Blunt of Carter and Jasper. Great work to you all.

I agree with Marse Paolillo. Stout work here Cody. I look forward to adding to the Fort's coffers and know that the proceeds that are raised will go to a fantastic cause.

If you have any extra after the event, I would be interested in procuring one of the pipe tampers, especially since the funds will go to preservation.

Sorry, but the only way to purchase one will be on site during the event. After the event, all items left will be donated to the site's living history program.

I might have to suck it up and travel the 1200 plus miles and 20 hour drive just for one of those sexy pipe tampers and patriotic snuff/ tobacco boxes. This looks like it will be a EFUBU can't miss event. The 150ths might be stealing the headlines, but the juicy stuff is usually between the covers. Wishing the best for this one. Cody' hard work ios going for a great cause. This site needs our help.

I don't have that Texas swagger so a Yankee prisoner I must be..:) My relatives in the 18th and 19th TX Cav might just flip in their graves while I am there.
Anyone up for a car pool? I will be coming from the Tampa Bay Area and should be hitting Mobile, Baton Rouge and Houston and many points in between on the way. Hit me up by PM if you want to ride with me.

Here's a photo of some of the items that will be in Wallick's Store during the event. It's not the best photo, due to me using my phone to shoot it, but I hope it will give the registrants some idea of what to expect. The pipes on the table will be packed in pasteboard boxes in saw dust, as the two boxes on the right of the image. The handsewn silk Texas flag is folded in the foreground under a stack of signed, uncut scrip.

Remember, all proceeds from the sutler's store will be donated to the site!
