  • Too late for Antietam?

    Hi all,

Its been a year or two since I've posted anything. Sorry.

I just read this(http://articles.herald-mail.com/2011...nt-dennis-frye) article in the Hagerstown Herald Mail. I hadn't realized that there was not going to be a reenactment or even a proper event during the sesquicentennial a year from now.

I am not experienced in planning events, nor do I know much of the logistics involved in doing so. My question is this: was there no way that we could have pulled something together to make an event happen? Is it too late now? I live in DC and am originally from Hagerstown/Sharpsburg. While I don't know much about the logistics of the event, IF someone wanted to do this, and you needed eyes on the ground, I would be willing to go around and scout out ground, talk to farmers, spread the word, WHATEVER I had to do. I have been reenacting for almost 10 years and have a particular fascination with Antietam, given I grew up virtually on the battlefield.

I'd appreciate some insight from the mods, or people who are experienced in planning events, if for no other reason, I would like to gain some experience in this facet of the hobby.

As an aside, maybe a large event would not be feasible. However, a smaller, hardcore centered event could still be engaging and educational. If anyone is interested in this prospect, please feel free to PM me and I'll send you my contact information.

    Most sincerely,

    Brian,

I am not sure if you are aware, but, while there is no "mega" event planned, Chris Anders is planning a "kilo-sized" event, called "Maryland my Maryland".

Also, there are groups planning living histories next September.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

It's a well know fact that the politicians in Maryland do not care about their civil war history. Lord help if you mention anything Confederate, they will label you a racist! Make no mistake about it the politicians failure to remember those brave men, both North and South will only cost the state in lost revenue. Oh well! We will be hosting plenty of events, large and small in the Old Dominion over the next four years. Sit back and watch Maryland, Again! Maryland's loss is Virginia's gain I guess. It's too bad because there was some great potential to have a really nice 150th Sharpsburg.

The anniversary weekend the mainstream Black Hat Battalion will be doing a LH at the battlefield. Camping next to the church and doing public demos. An adjunct company is in the works for this made up of mostly Michigan, Indiana and Ohio boys who do a lot together. We did this last year with a lot of success and memories. Other progressives will be welcomed to register wih us. Details are still in the works but there will be rations, impression guidelines, lots of history and remembering of those that fought there 150 years ago. The park has said we can stay through to the 17th too. If someone is interested send myself or Will Eichler a message. We will be sure to keep interested men in the loop.

The Hedgesville Blues will also be hosting a Confederate living history on the Antietam battlefield on the anniversary weekend (and Monday the 17th). We are planning to have at least three companies of infantry as we have done a couple of times in years past in conjunction with other campaigner organizations. The overall event commander will be Jerry Stiles of the Hedgesville Blues. Public demonstrations are being planned for the Cornfield, Sunken Road and near Burnside Bridge. We will be representing specific units at each of those locations and marching between each spot so as to be there as close as possible to the time the actual engagements took place. The plan right now is that we will be camping on the Piper Farm. Specific unit impressions and guidelines and a detailed schedule will be provided in the coming months.

Has anyone heard anything more concerning the march form Harpers to Antietam which Troy Cool was putting together? He had created a facebook group but I was curious if it was going to be tied into either a living history at the park or Anders event.
