Gents:
There is a very interesting event coming up next April, falling well after the Shiloh event. Several local historians and students of the New Mexico campaigns will be putting on "The Confederate Retreat", commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Confederate Texans' retreat from the territory in April 1862 following their victory at Glorietta Pass in March. They won the field, but their supplies were burned and their supply line was tenuous. General Sibley was forced to retire quickly back to Texas as the "California Column" approached to reinforce the Federal forces in the territory.
This will be a 4-day, 42-mile march following their route as much as possible for that portion of the retreat located south of Socorro and north of Fort Craig. The dates of this event are April 19-22, as close as possible to this portion of the retreat (which was April 17-21). On part of the route we will be passing the camps where buried Confederate cannon were found in the 1930's, as General Sibley found them impractical to move rapidly through the terrain. For this event, organizers have gained permission for march and camp through the Sevilleta Wildlife Refuge. This is beautiful and protected country, and permission for this type of event in that area is practically unheard of. In general, the route will be rural and unpopulated.
This is an event for CS infantry as well as cavalry/mounted infantry. The impression will be of Texas/Trans-Mississippi/Far West infantry and cavalry. The actual retreating units were a mixture of mounted and dimsounted men of the 2nd Texas Mounted Rifles and the 4th, 5th and 7th Texas Mounted Volunteers. Not everyone has access to (or ability with) horses, so this event will be open to infantry and cavalry.
Planners are hoping for mainly a campaigning/progressive effort; however, there will be mainstream involvement as well so I did not post this in the EFUBU section of the forum. Mods, if I made a mistake with that please let me know.
Support/logistics (medical, shadow vehicles, forage, water, etc.) are in the planning stages as we speak. I am in contact with the event organizers and will post registration information and other details as they become available.
Thanks and VR.
