  • Southwest Event: 150th Commemoration of the Confederate Retreat from New Mexico

    Gents:

There is a very interesting event coming up next April, falling well after the Shiloh event. Several local historians and students of the New Mexico campaigns will be putting on "The Confederate Retreat", commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Confederate Texans' retreat from the territory in April 1862 following their victory at Glorietta Pass in March. They won the field, but their supplies were burned and their supply line was tenuous. General Sibley was forced to retire quickly back to Texas as the "California Column" approached to reinforce the Federal forces in the territory.

This will be a 4-day, 42-mile march following their route as much as possible for that portion of the retreat located south of Socorro and north of Fort Craig. The dates of this event are April 19-22, as close as possible to this portion of the retreat (which was April 17-21). On part of the route we will be passing the camps where buried Confederate cannon were found in the 1930's, as General Sibley found them impractical to move rapidly through the terrain. For this event, organizers have gained permission for march and camp through the Sevilleta Wildlife Refuge. This is beautiful and protected country, and permission for this type of event in that area is practically unheard of. In general, the route will be rural and unpopulated.

This is an event for CS infantry as well as cavalry/mounted infantry. The impression will be of Texas/Trans-Mississippi/Far West infantry and cavalry. The actual retreating units were a mixture of mounted and dimsounted men of the 2nd Texas Mounted Rifles and the 4th, 5th and 7th Texas Mounted Volunteers. Not everyone has access to (or ability with) horses, so this event will be open to infantry and cavalry.

Planners are hoping for mainly a campaigning/progressive effort; however, there will be mainstream involvement as well so I did not post this in the EFUBU section of the forum. Mods, if I made a mistake with that please let me know.

Support/logistics (medical, shadow vehicles, forage, water, etc.) are in the planning stages as we speak. I am in contact with the event organizers and will post registration information and other details as they become available.

    Thanks and VR.

Just a bump. A physically demanding Southwestern 150th Commemorative event.

    Thanks.

What details do you have about the organization of this? Would you prefer participants to be members of the 2nd Mounted Rifles or volunteers?

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

Hey Cody. Great to hear there is interest out your way!

Impression is completely up to the participant, as long as it can be substantiated by research. As soon as I can get my hands on more org information I will get it posted for everyone. I have an event with the organizers the week of November 19, and will be bringing more information back from that event I'm sure.

All I can say at this point is that this event is a go. Muster day will be the 18th, and the step off day for the march will be the 19th.... I realize there are more questions than answers at this point but we are prodding away.

        Thanks,

          Gents -

Things are progressing well with event planning. The event will be called "Copwood's Cutoff." Right now this may actually be a 5-day event, which will be April 17 (arrival/muster day) through April 22 (completion day). The extra day is for those traveling good distances. A bit of rest before the hike begins.

Organizers are setting up shadow vehicles, EMS stand-by, etc., and firming up finishing touches on the actual route we will take.

Maps, contacts, registration information and additional details will be forthcoming in the very near future.

          Stand by to stand by.

            Gents -

There is unfortunate news with this event. The Federal Wildlife Service has declined to provide living historian access to any of their property for overnight camping.... Though it is workable to march around that property, it will be not be along the exact route of the march and would require a great deal of extra effort just to coordinate camp locations, support vehicles, etc., while at the same time trying to route marches into and out of the refuge to see the original camps and cannon burial sites. It just cannot be done to any significant scale.

I am very sorry to have to cancel this event for A/C purposes. I was truly looking forward to it; however, even if the event organizers continue to try and put something together, it will have to be very small scale, and there is just not enough time left for everyone to make their plans and get ready.

I apologize for any inconvenience, but I just was told this today. So it was news to me also.
