I'd like to thank everyone for making the trip to Fort McKavett this weekend. The Texans and POWs both followed the historical demeanor guidelines (the Texans were unprofessional, rowdy, intoxicated, and insubordinate and the POWs were resentful and disobedient on fatigue details) and made this a great event.

I'll post photos that some of the site volunteers took over the weekend, but here is one of the memorable events of the weekend:

    [HOUSTON] TRI-WEEKLY TELEGRAPH, October 28, 1863,

    Wanted.

All ladies in Houston and surrounding counties who have cloth on hand, which they can spare, are requested to donate it to the ladies of Crockett for the purpose of making petticoats for the Minute Men of this county, who have "backed out" of the service. We think the petticoat more suitable for them in these times.

    Cody,

A most excellent event indeed! The picture of Mr. "Tibidough" is a refreshing reminder of the events of yesterday. I rode upon the scene of punishment on my mount only to have him bolt from the rather sorry rendition of "The Bonnie Blue Flag" by the detainee. He had never reacted in such fear on the battlefield!

      A most interesting event!

There were times you could be civil and relax, but that white bearded TEXAN laying on the
barracks decking could be mean as hell!

I'm sending all pictures I took to Cody, he know who everyone is, he can forward them to those who want them.

        Re: Aar

I'll tell you this, being able to be at an historic place like Ft. McKavett and sleep in the barracks was a real treat.

I have never been there, and must say it made for an awesome setting. I got the far end bunk.

I didn't like the "Rock moving" punishment, due to a guy being caught with a small boot pistol in his belongings!

Thanks for the pictures Kevin! I do hope there is more to share as I will have a smile on my face for sometime. I enjoyed the lively arguement in the Sutler store with the Yankee Irishman as well as reading the latest news albeit several months old by the time it reached our post. Any newspaper was welcomed, even that darned scribble sheet from New York!

I appreciate the fact that many of us got to experience the same dysentery as those who manned the Fort earlier.
No really, I had a very good time.
Cody and others put a lot of work in this effort that I truly appreciate. Thanks for the weekend. Mr. Comer - I will have the rules of dominoes by Occupation.

My hat is off to Cody Mobley, The Ground Hornets and the Ft McKavett staff. Everything is indeed bigger in Texas, especially the hospitality. I had an absolute great time with great Friends and made some new ones as well. It was great to meet some people in person finally that I had only known in the cyber world. I had wonderful travel pards in Tall Rob "Uncle" Murray, Fred "bottle boiling" Baker and Bill "Dad" Rodman. It was a great time with you fellas. What a wonderful site with rich Texas Frontier history. I learned an awful lot and had a wonderful time bringing back to life an almost forgotten time and place during the American Civil War. Great Event!!!:D

                      Re: Aar

It was clear that Cody had invested a lot of time, effort, and energy into "Imprisoned on the Frontier." I was glad to make the trip to attend.

Marse Paolillo has already noted the four of us who carpooled at the San Antonio airport. The time spent on the drive, coming and going, was outstanding and the event was everything Cody promised.

The "venison trots" have been mentioned above but certainly added to a unique final night and morning.

Fort McKavett was a long way from Philadelphia. but well worth the trip. I had an outstanding time the entire weekend. From the trip down, to the visits at the sutler, to moving rocks from one pile to another, to the time spent in San Antonio on Sunday night, it was all good.

The highlight for me was when the Boy Scout troop was directed over to witness the torture of young Mr. LaBouef, who was found hanging by his thumbs with a rope around his legs---see photo above. The high winds, terrain, and wild turkey hazards reminded me of an old song:

                            Goin' back home
To the Village of the Sun
                            Out in back of Brady
Where the turkey farmers run, I done
                            Made up my mind
And I know I'm gonna go to Sun
Village, good God I hope the
                            Wind don't blow

It take the paint off your car
                            And wreck your windshield too,
I don't know how the people stand it,
                            But I guess they do
                            Cause they're all still there,
                            Even Cody Mobley too
