  • Winter Drill for Company K, 15th Iowa

    Company K,

We will have a company drill for all that can make it on the weekend of Feb 17-19, 2012. It will be held at Historic Fort Wayne, Detroit. The Fort is actually closed for the winter so we can not stay in the 1848 barracks unfortunately. However, we do have permission to use the front rooms of one of the 1880's officer houses which is used as the HFWC office. We will remove all the modern items, use period lighting, set up as many cots for bunks as possible and do our best to create a "barracks" like atmosphere for the weekend. We will be drilling in the original star fort parade ground in the shadow of the barracks and there is plenty of room to march. If you have not been there before we should at least be able to give a tour of the barracks on Friday before we start or on Sunday.

The cost will be $10-15 payable when you arrive. This will be to cover food expense and a small donation to the Historic Fort Wayne Coalition which supports the site. We will of course need a head count to plan for the meals.

The goal is to get to know each other as a company and to create Camp Halleck stories to take with us to Shiloh to enhance our first person experience. We can not create a full immersion weekend for this drill because of using the house but we will do our best.

More details to come but I wanted to get it on your calenders.

    Company K,

I would like to have a rough head count of the winter drill attendance by January 31.

If you are on the fence and find that you can make it closer to the drill date, give Jeremy and I a heads up. This will help ensure that sleeping space and appropriate rations can be provided.

I've been bumped off the boat!
Comrades of the Co. K -- with deep regret I must report that I will not be able to attend the grand adventure in Tennessee six weeks hence. Work schedule for late March forces me to retire before I've bven begun. Wth all the hard work of the organizers, it promises to be one of the best events of at least the past decade. Here's hoping to fall in with you lads at Perryville.
      Sincerely,
