Sent our registration Monday. Sean and I will be there as part of the ONV. So, we will have at least one drummer!

A group has been created for the ONV company for the 150th Pickett's Mill event. Please add yourself if interested. Otherwise adds will only happen if you give intentions of coming or register.

              Re: 150th Battle of Pickett's Mill May 30th - June 1st, 2014

From researching Echoes of Battle: The Atlanta Campaign, by Strayer and Baumgartner, the Corps badge for the Feds we are portraying at this event is that of Wood's 3rd Division of the IV Corps.

That badge in particular is listed as being officially adopted in April 1864, so it would be appropriate for the Feds to have them, though how widespread these were adorning uniforms is difficult to determine since most photos don't show soldiers wearing them with any clarity.

I am posting this to not only generate discussion, but also to gauge interest in having these reproduced for the event. Further, these we're die cut and issued so I recommend using a single source so we present some sort of uniformity. I might also have a few made up in sterling silver based upon a photo on pg 214 in Baumgartners book, but want to be sure there is interest before going ahead with this. The cost may also be prohibitive, so more to follow.

However, I have a source who can make these in the proper felt, but in the interest of not having to sew these on in the parking lot before the event starts I would want to get them to participants in advance. Conversely, S&S sutler has them with bullion trim and in metal for $8 and $4 respectively, but the badges I am looking to have made will likely cost less than $2.

What do people think? It is all about the details, as you know.

This will be my third trip down to do the Mill, and I have loved every other previous version.

Seems my question was discussed at length prior to the Pickett's Mill event TEN YEARS ago! What is old is new again.

Still, I welcome some discussion based upon research in the intervening years since new things are uncovered all the time. I am making a few up anyway.

Ivan, I'd 100% be interested in the 4th Corps badge for the event. Yup, I'm with the Blue Team at the event.

On another note, since we are heading into the end of the year, I'm catching up on re-researching some accounts pertaining the battle. I hope to post some of them here in the next few weeks.

I am working on the prototypes now and will post photos once I have them.

For those who have Baumgartner's book, the chapter on the Hell Hole has great stuff on New Hope Church and Pickett's Mill.

Robert, We need the registrations in by May 26th, 2014 which is Memorial Day. Easy for everyone, (including me) to remember.

Going along with Ivan's book suggestion, Marcus Woodcock's account, edited by Kenneth Noe is a good read as well. "A Southern Boy in Blue: The Memoir of Marcus Woodcock, 9th Kentucky Infantry." Granted the section on Pickett's Mill is not a large portion of the book, the details of the Atlanta Campaign leading up to it are great, and Woodcock does a good job describing the terrain around the battlefield. Pro Tip: The terrain hasn't changed.

Found the specific order this evening : http://books.google.com/books?id=KL1...page&q&f=false This link goes to the beginning of the order. The specifics about badges and places where they should be fastened are found at page 508 under Part II.

The order issued on 24 April 1864 for the Department of the Cumberland is rather clear : the men were mandated to wear them. Whether they did is another matter. Hazen's account notes his brigade was inspected by the acting inspector general of the Fourth Corps a few days after Pickett's Mill. No mention about whether anyone was docked for failing to sport one after such a horrific battle waged by the Third Division.

Thanks, Silas, that is what I have been searching for as the reference. I agree that the post battle inspection was likely focused on finding survivors, assessing resupply requirements, and combat readiness of men and equipment, and hopefully not docking them for being "out of uniform" (my quote).

Herb and I have been discussing this topic at length off-board and I will be posting information regarding this project in the coming days. As I posted earlier, this thread was also discussed in-depth for PM '04, so while it is nothing new, the arguments for their use continue to inspire discussion. More to follow, and I really appreciate your finding that source documentation.

Happy New Year everyone. Looking forward to the event.
