  • Before The Storm November 13-15 2015

    : November 13-15 2015
Event hosted by the Widow Makers Mess (Poc Jordan Roberts and Clint Stanley)

It's November 1864. Times are changing on the Georgia coast. Not only has Atlanta been destroyed but Hood and the AOT has abandoned the state. Sherman has begun his raid south but his destination is still unknown. All forces left in Georgia are preparing for the Yankees invasion.
Fort Macallister has sat just south of Savannah defending from ironclad attacks for years. But now it not only faces the threat from the sea but also from the land. It's final months before the Decmeber battle is a busy time as regular Artillary units and Georgia Reserves prepare the forts landward defenses as well as maintaining an eye to the sea.

Before the storm is a living history garrison type event that attempts to replicate this time. We will have a two to three company garrison portraying the units stationed there in 64. This will be a working garrison as participants will preform guard mount, Artillary and infantry drill as well as fatigue duties.

Fort Mcallister Historic site is a well preserved earthen fort complete with barracks, cabins, blacksmith shope, bombproofs and powder magazine. It is just south of Savannah on the Ogeechee River. Participants will have visitor interaction during the day and first person during the evenings and night.

Many sucessful garrison events have been preformed here before and we plan to build upon these with a twist. Instead of focusing on the earlier garrison life with its multitude of impressions and visiting officers we want to focus on the later garrison troops made of leftover Artillery units and reserves. This was a time of getting the Fort prepared for battle and new units being garrisoned there.

    More information to come soon.

Jordan, thanks for stepping up with this effort. As you know, It takes little convincing for me to do a garrison event Fort McAllister. I know that most the guys in the Armory Guards are interested in this, and we may be able to drag Robby off of his plantation for this as well.

Big thumbs up for using the Georgia Reserves and the Artillery commands as the guiding impressions. Besides the annual December battle event, it is great to portray these commands at something a little different.

So, ready to get that hot shot furnace worked up again?

Re: Before The Storm November 13-15 2015

More info to come after this month and everything settles down in reenacting.

      Command structure as of now

      Garrison Commander: Joe Blunt
      Adj: Clint Stanley

      Emmett Rifles (AG/WIG) Herb Coats
      Clinch's Battery(Liberty Guards/Widow Makers) Jordan Roberts/Walter Cook

As of right now we are keeping it at two companies. But depending on the support we get we are entertaining the thought of a third company portraying Georgia Reserves

I would be interested in an artillery impression.

David, thanks for the interest. After speaking with Jordan Roberts a little more, it is in his plan for all participants to get drill time on the fort's field piece, and the heavy guns. Of course, the heavy guns are non functional, but the field piece is. We'll also get some infantry drill in too.

Glad for your interest David. Our goal will be to have two Art company's to drill on both heavy guns and the 6 pounder. We think this will be a unique visual and expirence to show a fully functioning coastal battery

Jordan, looks good buddy. I know you'll flesh the website out later on.

The good news is that the Armory Guards voted to make this a max effort event.

From “Guardian of Savannah” by Roger S Durham
“Maj. Anderson stockpiled supplies. More than 1,000 pounds of bacon, 2,250 pounds of hard bread, and other rations where secured to give the garrison a months supply. Other supplies such as 40 gallons whiskey, 40 gallons molasses, fifty pounds candles, and salt were also obtained”

I will try to post a little bit of info each week to help everybody get in the right mindset for the event. i will also add this info to the website.

McAllister is a really neat place. I enjoyed coming down a few years ago for a LH. Hopefully I can make it down that way for this one. Folks, if you haven't been to the place, it's worth the trip.

Though a year before October 31 1863 the quartermaster reports give an idea to the life od troops on the coast enjoy

“The clothing on hand consists as follows:
Infantry Jackets: A lot [of 1300] made of English cloth, with metallic
buttons, a good article and strongly put up; a lot [of 2600] made of
Georgia jeans, from the Richmond [Georgia] factory, with wooden buttons, an
inferior article compared to the first.
Pantaloons: A lot [of 150] made of English tweed pants, a good article (the
artillery in and around Savannah has been provided with these pants for the
last six months); a lot [of 800] made of Georgia homespun, manufactured in
Savannah, a strong article of light gray but rather thin for winter; a lot
[of 6,700] made of Georgia jeans, a pretty good article, off light gray.
Besides the above, the Quartermaster has on hand a lot of 1400 jackets and
pants of Georgia homespun which were turned over to him by the state of
Georgia and which, as a last resort, might be used for the troops. It is a
poor article, however, thin for the season, and almost white.
Drawers and Shirts: [A lot of] 8000, of white cotton. These shirts and
drawers are made in Savannah, under supervision of the Quartermasters, who
employ for that purpose the wives and female relations of Ga. soldiers.
Shoes: A lot of 150 pairs of shoes of different patterns; a lot of 200
pairs French army shoes of strong materials, but most of them do not match.
Said lot hardly fit for issue.
[Miscellaneous:] 6000 pairs cotton socks; 2000 blankets. The QM has also a
lot of 18 second handed blankets fit for use and another lot of 36 damaged,
rotten blankets, entirely unfit for use. Oil cloth caps about 175; gray
cloth caps [about] 300. Thread: 10,000 spools. Bone buttons for drawers and
shirts 600 great gross; metallic buttons 700 gross; shirt buttons 400 gross.
