For the sake of redundancy, and be sure that everyone can see these, here are the posted guidelines for the event taken from http://barksdalesbrigade.weebly.com/guidelines.html

There is ample time for everyone to get a good kit together for this, and there is no shortage of loaner gear out there, should you be lacking an item or two.

Thanks for reading this- I'm looking forward to seeing this come to fruition!

NOTE: All Uniform items and equipage will be made of correct materials using period correct methods. Further explanation should not be required.

The Brigade during the Gettysburg campaign would have fit the stereotypical “Ragged Rebel” description pretty well. This would be the perfect event to bring out some of the more worn out pieces of gear you may have in the closet.

    Uniforms (In Order of Preference)

    Headgear:
Broad Brimmed Slouch hat, of any period style (Beehive, English import, etc)
    Jeans Cloth Kepi

    Jacket:
    Commutation style Jacket
    Richmond Depot type II
    Civilian Jacket

Note: Mississippi Buttons are highly encouraged.

    Trousers:
    Civilian Pattern Trousers
    Richmond Depot style Trousers

Proper Jean, Cassimere and Satinet only. No checks, corduroy or striped material allowed.

    Shirt:
    Confederate Issue shirt
    Civilian Shirt

    Socks:
Hand or period machine knit socks
    Proper cotton socks

    Shoes:
    Civilian Shoes and Boots
    CS Issued Shoes
    Imported British shoes
    US Brogans and boots

Note: Proper footwear is required by NPS standards.

    Weapons:
    P53 Enfield
    M1855/61 Springfield
    M1841 “Mississippi” Rifle
    Lorenz/foreign weaponry

NOTE: Muskets should be properly De-Farbed with modern finishes removed, as well as modern markings. Bayonets should fit the musket and be in working order. It should go without saying, but it’ll be said now; all weapons WILL be clean and in good working order prior to event registration.

    Accoutrements:

    Bayonet Scabbard:
    CS Issue Scabbard
    Enfield Style Scabbard
    US Issue Scabbard

NOTE: Scabbard should be appropriate to the weapon and bayonet being carried.

    Cartridge Box:
    Documented CS box
    Documented US box

    NOTE: Boxes WILL have tins.

    Cap Pouch:
    Documented CS pouch
    Documented US Pouch

    Waist-Belt:
    CS Belt with MS Plate
CS Frame or Forked tongue buckle
    Roller buckle
US Belt with Modified or unmodified US Plate

A Note on Ammunition- As this is a NPS site, all rounds must be turned in for inspection IMMEDIATELY upon arrival. Please bring rounds properly packaged, in a zip lock bag and LABELED CLEARLY with your name attached. Your rounds will be issued back to you after the safety inspection. At that time the Zip Lock Bag will be discarded. Please bring 40 rounds and caps.

NOTE: The 21st and the Mississippi Brigade had captured some Uniforms and Equipment prior to the Gettysburg Campaign. This is one of the few scenarios where using “Captured” US Gear is acceptable. That being said, a full suit of blue and full US traps aren’t what we are going for here.

    Haversack:
    Documented CS Pattern Haversack
    Federal issue haversack

    Canteen:
    CS Wooden canteen
    Drum Style canteen
Federal Smooth side Canteens, covered or uncovered. (No St. Lewis style stopper/chain combinations)

    Blanket:
    Civilian Style Blanket
    Carpet Blanket
    CS Issued Blanket
    US Issued Blanket

    Ground cloth:
    Oil Cloth / Painted Carpet
    Floor Cloth
    US Gum Blanket

Note: If you have a Carpet Blanket or a painted carpet- this would be the event to use them at.

    Tent/Fly:
    CS Fly
    US Shelter Half

    Knapsack:
    British Import Pack
    Documented CS Issued Pack
    Blanket Roll
    US Double Bag

Note: the 21st was issued 102 Knapsacks in April 1863. Most men should be wearing a Knapsack.

Courtesy of Chad Teasley, some food for thought when putting the impression together

From the diary of Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Fremantle, British Army, observing the Army of Northern Virginia during the retreat from Gettysburg:

    "6 July (Monday) -

...I particularly observed the marching to-day of the 21st Mississippi, which was uncommonly good. This regiment all wear short round jackets, a most unusual circumstance, for they are generally unpopular in the South."
