  • 3rd PA Reserves at "On To Richmond," 2-4 June, 2017

    Gentlemen,

This is to make the announcement for THE adjunct of 2017. 2-4 June, 2017 Chris Anders and Mike Lavis with Rear Rank Productions are holding the event "On To Richmond" for the 155th Peninsula Campaign. We will be portraying the 3rd Pennsylvania Reserves in Brigadier General George Meade’s Second Brigade of the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. The event will take place at Endview Plantation and Lee Hall Manor, two plantations with rich Civil War history on the Virginia Peninsula. The 3rd Reserves were not a flashy unit and this will not be a specialty impression, just the portrayal of one of the

Our plan is to be as immersive as possible at an adjunct, and Mike Lavis, the federal commander, is extremely supportive of our efforts. This is an event that should push men and as much as possible emulate the trying physical conditions that the Army of the Potomac marched and fought under during the campaign. Expect that by the time this event is order, you will be tired, hungry and glad to reach the safety of the James River. Expect special emphasis on skirmish and picket duty during this event, and be ready to see more skirmishers out at once than most of us have ever seen. There is also a night march in the works for Saturday night into Sunday morning, as the men of the 3rd Reserves were on the move at night and fought or stood duty during the day during the Seven Days Battles. More information will be passed on that as our permits are approved, but expect a challenging march on roads that are very close to period with very little modern interruptions.

So far, we have the following organization:
    Colonel: Andy Roscoe, Western Rifles
Lt. Colonel: Tom Steele, Sally Port Mess
    Major: Sam Lowe, Western Rifles
Adjutant: Jeremy Bevard, Sally Port Mess
Quartermaster: Will Eichler, Saginaw City Light Infantry
Sergeant Major: Joe Blunt, 48th New York
Color Sergeant – Jim Aybels, Liberty Rifles

    A Company (24th MO) – Jonathan Siltman
C Company (Army of the Pacific) – Dom Da Bello
D Company (Holmes Brigae) – Aaron Racine
E Company (Western Rifles) – Jim Taub
G Company (Washington Guards / Border State Guards) - Officer TBD
Unassigned (Sallyport Mess / Saginaw City Light Infantry / Tanglefoot Mess) - Greg Swank

We have a few other groups that are discussing forming companies at this time, however, if there is anyone interested in coming forward and raising a company for this event, contact me at 24thmi@gmail.com and comment here. Our intention is to raise a full, ten-company battalion for this event. Jim Abels is have a set of PA Reserve colors struck for this event, so we will have exceedingly accurate colors to march under.

      Bullfrog,

There will be guidelines posted soon, the other adjunct leads and I are looking over the draft now. There won't be anything odd or pressing, M1861s as the preferred weapon, light blue trousers, and frocks if people have them, with sacks being fine if they do not. I'm glad you will be able to come out and join us on this one!

          Gentlemen,
The uniform standards for the event have been added. Thanks to Jim Aybels for his research in putting this together. This was complied from the records of the 3rd Reserves in Harrisburg. Please review them and try your best to follow them. This was still early in the war, and the unit was still fairly uniform at this point. Nothing in here is unusual and these should not be a burden to anyone. Please pay attention to "Preferred" and "Accepted." We understand that not everyone has a federal frock coat (and that there are few makers left), but we urge you to wear one if you have it, but that a sack coat is completely acceptable. If you have the frock, please wear it though.

G Company (Washington Guards / Border State Guards) - Officer TBD (Joe Caridi)

We are still looking for organizations that are interested in taking leads for the last three company slots - Companies H, I, and K. Talk to your messmates and let your leadership know that you want to come! This is an opportunity you do not want to miss.

Re: 3rd PA Reserves at "On To Richmond," 2-4 June, 2017

I am happy to be in position to announce today a big part of what we will be doing for the event. On of the most trying parts of the campaign for the Army of the Potomac was fighting by day and marching all night to fall back to the next position. It left men utterly exhausted, and their accounts of the campaign clearly show how the cumulative affects of fatigue, hunger, and exhaustion all wore on them.

To that end, after months of planning and negotiation, I can say that we will be bringing that experience to the participants. During Saturday night, we will be engaging on a night march from 6-9 miles in length. The route we have selected takes the best advantage of non-improved roads so that the vast majority of the march will be on period-appropriate surfaces.
Our goal for this adjunct has always been to create an experience that is as trying as possible while still in the confines of the larger event. You want to push everyone that comes, to feel how moving all night and little sleep affects men, and we want everyone to walk away from this event with a better appreciation of what life and combat in the Seven Days was like.

I will say there will be one modern experience during part of the march for a brief time. It is a requirement from the event organizers and site hosts, and there is no way around that. However, it will be a small disturbance for what will be an excellent opportunity.

I hope this is as exciting for everyone else as it is for me. A battalion night march over significant distances is something done at exceedingly few events, and this is a great opportunity to feel what it was like. Few things can help us be in the moment more than this, and I am glad we could get this to work for you and to help make for such an opportunity.

We added a new history link to the unit page via the website. If you go to http://www.westernrifles.org/3rd-pennsylvania-reserves where you will find the registration links, event standards and links to the facebook group, there is now a link to the Pennsylvania Reserves History at http://www.pareserves.com/?q=node/1367 . Also, just a reminder we still have some open company slots if units are interested in getting on board. Check us out and get registered!
