I encourage everyone to check out the group I have set up. I will be posting plenty of info on it and here as well.
Some quick facts about the very interesting company:
1: Formed mostly from Anderson County South Carolina, in the far northwestern corner of the state.
2: One of the oldest Confederate Volunteer companies, it was formed in early January 1861 just a few weeks after South Carolina left the Union.
3: After choosing the name "Confederate Guards" It was first part of the 4th South Carolina Infantry and fought as part of that unit at First Manassas as Company "J"
4: In the spring of 1862 the Confederate Army was reorganized due the new Conscription act. In many of the early South Carolina regiments there was chaos, with many companies transferring to different regiments. The 4th SC was hit particularity hard, with the Confederate Guards and three other companies leaving to join the newly formed Palmetto Sharpshooters under Col. Micah Jenkins. When the dust settled, the 4th SC was left with only 5 companies and was forced to reorganize as the 13th SC Battalion, (but was often incorrectly called the 4th SC Bttn.) Eventually battle losses forced a further consolidation into two companies that were then attached to the Hampton Legion Infantry Regiment in the fall of 1862.
