I would like to thank those who made the long haul out to Fort McKavett to make the event the success that it was. We had participants from Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas help us recreate a window into the last two weeks of the POW camp at Fort McKavett before the Regulars were transferred to Fort Mason and the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles were mustered out of service. During the course of the event the participants assisted in the recreation of the historic footpaths around the parade ground, constructing shutters for the east side of the original 1852 barracks, and planting the post garden. The post trader's store offered entertainments when the work parties were able to sneak away, and an itinerant photographer was able to capture some nice ambrotypes of the Regulars at work and those that wanted to send a keepsake home.
I would like to thank Megan Sothan in her role as a refugee attached to the commissary for everything that she did to make sure the meals were ready in a timely manner, Mitch Critel for overseeing the carpentry projects, site staff Kevin Malcolm in his role as intermediary between the public and the first person event, Jay Wright and Ryan Johnson for keeping the ledger book in the sutler's store, Frank Siltman for acting as first sgt. for the prisoners, and Adam Johnson as the lieutenant of Co. E, 1st Texas Mtd Rifles. These individuals kept the event moving forward and allowed me to step back and shoot the ambrotypes during the event. Thank you for stepping in and helping out.
