The Hairy Nation Boys are happy to announce that our living history at Lookout Mountain is back on! This year there was a last minute conflict with the date so we had to cancel. The new date will be June 23-25, 2017. This date was picked so that it would not hurt attendance at other events. Our impression will be Company B of the 31st Iowa. More details to come as we work with the NPS on this living history.

31st Iowa Company B Guidelines for Lookout Mountain Living History
June 23-25, 2017
Impression date is November 1863
Muskets
1) P1853 Enfield
2) M1861 Springfield
3) NO SMOOTHBORES ALLOWED
All weapons will go under NPS inspection. Come without any caps or rounds. NPS will provide.
This is the one thing we know. Companies A & B had enfields right off the bat, while the other 8 companies had to start out with Prussian smoothbores. Thankfully, they also received enfields while at Benton Barracks, so they never had to take the field with the hated Prussians.
Headgear
1) Forage cap
1) Dress hat
In November ’63 the 31st Iowa had been in the field only 11 months. Their time in the works at Vicksburg was their only extended time on campaign to this point. For this reason, we imagine there was still a large number of caps in the regiment. Ideally, we feel like it should be about evenly split between caps and hats.
Coats
1) Sack coat
2) We do not believe they were issued frock coats.
Trousers
Standard sky blues issue of correct period construction.
Shoe
Brogans of correct period construction
Boots
Baggage
1) Knapsack
Again, with less than one year in the field everyone should still have a knapsack.
Blanket
1) Army blanket
2) Civilian blanket
With the blanket shortage in the fall of ’62, the 31st (along with many other regiments) were asked to bring along blankets from home. While there was plenty of time in the next year to draw army blankets, it seems possible that there could have been a fair number of citizens’ blankets still being carried.
2 Rivet scabbard, Canteen with leather or linen sling.Last edited by Hairy Nation Boys; 01-10-2017, 11:45 AM.Nathan Hellwig

Re: Company B 31st Iowa Living History at Lookout Mountain
Howdy, Holler.
Am firming up my summer plans this week, so first thing first is to make sure I have that time available. (And avoid the disappointment I experienced in missing the boat ride to Shiloh some years back ...) Anyway, I may have access to an M1861 if the .577 Tower I principally use won't pass muster; that is, if the standards were to call for "bright/burnished" hardware. (My Armisport model has the blued barrel, etc.)
Sounds like it would be OK, but just wanted to check.
Thanks. How close are you to the 25-man registration cap?Paul Hadley

Re: Company B 31st Iowa Living History at Lookout Mountain
OK, I'm never been accused of being computer literate. I can't get the electronic registration to open so I will print out the info you request here and email to Mike, then see if I can get PayPal to send in the $25. If I get aced out at the 11th hour, I guess I'll have to live with being on the "wait" list.
Best regards.Paul Hadley

Re: Company B 31st Iowa Living History at Lookout Mountain
We need a drummer.
Who will play this fine (perhaps one of the finest) reproduction Soistman drum at the event? It is in my collection and was played at Bentonville.
image.jpeg
It is copied from the one in the collections of the Iowa State Historical Society in Des Moines, Iowa, carried by a drummer in the 28th Iowa.
