  • Come Help Support the NPS & Do Living History Where It Happened!

The boys of the Lost Towney Mess and Yamhill Mess want to extend an invitation to the wider authentic living history community to attend a special event on Washington State's picturesque San Juan Island. This August we will commemorate the 160th anniversary of the short-lived "Pig War" at American Camp on the southern tip of the island. Start your ACW 160th commemoration right with a re-creation of the U.S. and British military concentration in the far-flung Pacific Northwest, a concentration that nearly precipitated a shooting war between our great nations on the eve of our own civil conflict!

For those that commit, period rations and ferry transport will be provided gratis (free) by the National Park Service. We have the tentage to support 54-60 men under Sibley canvas. Other tentage & shelter is available. This event will be capped at 65 men.

Our command structure is already set; overall command will fall under that of Mark "Silas" Tackitt portraying Maj. Granville Haller. The impression will be that of the 4th Infantry, Company A circa 1859 but we also want volunteers to portray that of the 11-man squad detachment of U.S. Engineers (Company A) that served on the island. Uniforms will be pre-war U.S. Regular Army featuring frock coats, dark blue trousers, dress hats, proper accoutrements, and so on. Thirteen of our men have also negotiated a special buy via Don Smith for the pre-war forage cap featuring a sky blue welt. Engineer troops may wear blue overshirts for fatigue use. We did a special buy with Dan Wambaugh two years ago for this impression. Check with both Don and Dan for those respective items should you wish to incorporate them into your impression.

A public FB page is in the works and will be launched soon with details regarding ferry transport, impression specifics, air/ground transportation, and our plans to march aboard the ferry in full gear as we've done in the past. We have developed a very positive working relationship with the NPS and rangers at the park eagerly anticipate a great showing for this event. Please note, you will be doing living history on the very same ground where this historic event occurred 160 year ago. You will also be encamped in one of the most beautiful places in the world. From our site you will have full view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Olympic Mountains, Victoria, B.C., the majestic volcanic peaks of Mount Baker & Mount Rainier, and, of course, delightful Garrison Bay. We will tread the ground once walked by Capt. George Pickett, Lt. Henry M. Robert (of Robert's Rules of Order fame), Capt. Lewis Cass Hunt (Henry's brother), and Lt. Col. Silas Casey.

East and West Coasters, set aside AUG 23-25, 2019 for a great event and the hospitality of fellow pards in the Pacific Northwest!

This is a great idea. I worked on the archaeological team that excavated American Camp 1976-77. Authenticity-minded students and scholars will want to get ahold of the reports published by the University of Idaho, under project director Roderick Sprague, for the NPS. In the reports, button manufacturers are identified, clay pipe styles detailed, alcoholic beverages preferred by soldiers revealed, as well as identifications on all of the equipment used by infantry and artillery units stationed at American Camp. I'll attempt to post some pictures in an album.

It would really be a wonderful experience to sleep in a Sibley tent in the shadow of "Robert's Gopher Hole" (earthen redoubt).

Unfortunately I have the sad news to report that this event has been cancelled. Our NPS contact was forced to pull the event due to extreme fire danger. His superiors and that of WA State DNR said no go on any events in August due to local extreme drought conditions. As the event site is located on a natural prairie and one prone to major fires at the drop of a hat (as was seen a year ago), we had to cancel the event. On the other hand, we will reschedule but at a different time of year in in better conditions.
