"With six thousand men Gregg had met the advance of Grant's army, and had successfully resisted his advance in a regular battle of eight hours. Our loss was over ten per cent, or six hundred and fifty men killed and wounded. The history of the war furnishes no instance where the heroic gallantry of Southern soldiers showed to better advantage. After the lapse of eighteen years the memory of Raymond, though fought by a single brigade of Confederates against fearful odds, stands out as one of the most remarkable and hard-fought battles of the war. Not one of the regiment commanders is now alive, and Gregg himself fought his last battle in front of Petersburg, and now sleeps with the rest." -- Sumner A. Cunningham, 41st Tennessee Infantry writing of his experiences at Raymond in 1886
Friends, progress on this effort is moving forward! The event staff will be conducting our final site walk through on Saturday, March 9th. There is one major announcement that I wish to share with all of those attending or sitting on the fence regarding this effort.
I was notified yesterday that the Friends of Raymond, who are hosting us and currently maintain the battlefield, have made a deal with the Vicksburg NPS and Federal entities to give them the Raymond battlefield. This deal will take effect within the next two years. In short, this will be the last chance ANYONE has of doing an event or setting foot on the original ground in the same context, again.
Personally, I am saddened by this decision, and yet, emboldened to bring as many quality friends to properly give the 7th Texas and stories of those who served at Raymond their due time. I hope you will take this into consideration when it comes time to decide if you will participate with us. The Trans-Miss Hellcats, WIG, and 40 Rounds, will be the last organizations to ever host an event at Raymond. We hope you will join us.
