Currency Exchange
All goods, services, gambling, and etc. will be conducted in period Missouri (and surrounding States) currency. This currency will be fully backed by US dollars. The rate of exchange is 10% of the face of the bill. Meaning, if you send $1.00 USD, you will get $0.10 in period currency.
Now, to keep this historically correct and add to the historical complexity, bills from let us say Iowa will be discounted to 50% of the 19th Century face. For example, if you sent $1.00 USD, you might end up with $0.20 of Iowa Currency, but with the buying power of $0.10. You end up with the same amount of money, but the makeup of the currency changes. Such sub exchange rates will be posted by the merchant. Welcome to the 19thCentury and a non-standardized currency. Additionally, currency supplied by the Missouri State Guard, checks, and other such currency will be utilized as appropriate.
Couple of the things to keep in mind, please do NOT bring your own currency and try to use it. The currency in use is fully backed modern USD and all authorized bills have been serialized and signed.
Exchange Process:
The most preferable method is to Paypal ajkasmar@yahoo.com with the amount of currency you would like. Please note your name in the comments section and use Friends and Family. You can do this up to 5 days before the event – but earlier the better to allow the team to produce the currency in a timely manner. Cash or Paypal exchange at the registration table will be accepted at a limited basis.
At the end of the event, all unused currency can be exchanged back to USD. Or, if you desire, it can be donated to the Civil War Preservation Trust.
2. As with many merchants, 1861 was a grand opportunity to cash in on the war, and the good merchants of Missouri were certainly no exception to this rule. As early as January 1861, Missouri merchants began advertising an increasing number of military goods, fieldwares (beyond those more commonly seen for Western expansion), military cloths, and an increasing number of military goods and arms. Accordingly, Ben Jenkins will be operating a small merchant shop on the event site, with wares and goods that are well documented to Missouri during the summer of 1861.
