Confederate desiccated vegetables? Of course! "One of these steamers is now discharging an immense pile of desiccated vegetables, which are for the consumption of the rebel army and for which she will take in return cotton belonging to the rebel Government." -July 1863. The 13th Virginia regularly drew desiccated vegetables in camp along the Rapidan prior to the spring campaign. George Peyton recalled one day in February 1864 "Today I drew meal, flour, bacon, vegetable soup, and lard." As he later described, "It is made of all kinds of vegetables pressed together in tin cans that hold, I suppose, 40 pounds." The Liberty Rifles will put the new vegetable press to good work in 2019!
