Re: Must read for your impression...General Lee's Army

I bought the book after reading the endorsements here. I am only 1/2 through and am a little disappointed. Much of it has been good, however I think he has a couple of agendas he wants to prove. As has been posted, I think a researcher can make an assumption and go find resources to support the assumption. To speak plainly, it is the subject of slavery. He does a pretty good job tying in slavery but why quote a soldier about any other subject and say something like "Pvt. Joe Blow, a slaveholder, wrote home how awful the food was." So far, I get the impression he feels all the Confederates should have been put in a bag & thrown off a bridge when they were puppies. It's amazing how well they did, being the evil people they were.
"Bowen's division sustained its reputation by making one of its grand old charges, in which it bored a hole through the Federal army, and finding itself unsupported turned around and bored its way back again" - Gen. Pemberton's chief engineering officer

Good book, great read, but also agree with Easy Sam. The author coved slavery in the first chapter. I got the picture. No need to repeat.
