I bought a copy, but could not find a good Swahili/Cantonese dictionary to decipher the dialects.

The cover art was interesting, though....I didn't know pigs to get into those postions, especially holding muzzle-loaders.

Re: "Gods & Generals" Director's Cut to be Premiered

My wife and I enjoyed it but we are easily entertained. I also enjoy Tom and Jerry cartoons. Just saw Judge Priest with Will Rogers and it was pretty good. Saw "The General" staring Charlie Chaplin (I think) and it was good. I am even entertained by reading all these post.

The long version of God's and Generals was shown by Ron Maxwell at my wifes first cousin's home outside of Washington, DC and he also liked it but he is not a Civil War person.

            Dear Sir ,
Thanks for the information. I have yet to see a reenactor/living historian appear as authentic as Brian "Speedy " Merrick , who appears in this film. Quality actors, quality filming, soundtrack ( 2nd South Carolina String Band ) , quality uniforms made by companies that advertise in this pages or are so approved, an almost historically authentic script ; perhaps some of these efforts should be applauded instead of derided.
Last year I had a conversation with Colonel and Mrs. Keith Gibson of V.M.I. They worked on both "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals" . When "Gettysburg " was released , people asked them how they could have worked on such a poor film. When "Gods and Generals' was released they were asked why they hadn't made it a "good " movie like "Gettysburg ". Pretty much sums it up , don't it ?

              Claude,

It was the great Buster Keaton, and it is a fine film for young and old.

View "Steamboat Bill, Jr." someday, if you haven't already. While not a CW film, per se, the working riverboats are enjoyable to see.

Re: "Gods & Generals" Director's Cut to be Premiered

Every once in a while in my European History class in school, we get on a discussion about movies. Even though it's a European class I still think this holds true. No matter what when it's all said and done it 's going to be a Hollywood film, even if you tack on another painstaking two hours.

Just as with authenticity in our own events, authenticity in a movie is never truly and completely obtained. I think any movie has to be taken with a big grain of salt.
Take the movies for what they are and move on. Because if there was a "perfect" civil war movie, who would want to sit through hours upon hours of boring daily camp life scenes in addition to just drilling?

A major retool of this turkey would require complete replacement, using a director worthy of the title, real actors, a good script, 2.5 hours max, an authentic story but retaining Speedy Merrick and some of the horses.

Jeff Shaara cannot write, Maxwell cannot direct and we don't need still another group of reenactors who hose us all by working for free. God willing, Last Full Measure (rip-off of the title of one the greatest Regimental Histories) will not get made.

How could anyone ever confuse the great Buster Keaton for the tramp! Keaton ranks as one of my top silent movie actors, along with Lon Cheney.

TCM has aired several of his movies over the last year...and in fact had a Buster Keaton (B.K.) marathon just a month or two ago. I believe they said that he not only produced and directed The General, but also wrote the script...age 21?

It's a real shame that once talkies came into play, B.K. was progressively reduced to playing bit cameo rolls in B movies.

If Last Full Measure DOES get made, let's hope they ban Jeff Daniels from the donuts... Chamberlain doesn't need to appear any more pudgy than he did in God's and Generals.

Lt. Chamberlain: "The donuts, sir. They're...they're..."

*Colonel Chamberlain stares hard at Lieutenant Chamberlain, looking concerned.*

Col. Chamberlain: "Well, what is it?! What is it?!"
Lt. Chamberlain: "I'm afraid they've all been eaten, sir."

*Colonel Chamberlain places his hand to his hat, removing it from his head.*

Col. Chamberlain: "Are...are you certain they're all gone?"

                        *Lieutenant Chamberlain nods solemnly.*

*Dramatic pause: Colonel Chamberlain looks off into the distance.*

Col. Chamberlain: "You find more Lieutenant, is that understood?"
                        Lt. Chamberlain: "Sir! Yes, sir!"

*Lieutenant Chamberlain begins to ride off.*

                        Col. Chamberlain: "Jelly!"

*Lieutenant Chamberlain stops and turns his horse around.*

                        Lt. Chamberlain: "Sir?"
Col. Chamberlain: "Jelly, I said. Be sure to find some jelly."
Lt. Chamberlain: "Yes, uh, I'll see what I can find."
Col. Chamberlain: "Thank you, Thomas...thank you."

YEP! nobody's ever satisfied! I found it 'enteretaining' much better than 'American Idol' or 'Next Dumb Bimbo" or"Some guy backstabs his comrades AND BECOMES KING OF THA FREAKIN ISLAND'..theres plenty to pick on but I could do that with most any movie! course I liked "The Magnificant Seven" too even tho they had non Mexican banditoes
