  • American War letters

Since Memorial Day is coming up, I thought I would post this website. Take it for what it's worth, but I thought it was pretty interesting.

    Re: American War letters

Interesting! I just recently read a letter my mother has, which was written by my g-g-grandfather to the "folks at home" in February 1863. His name was Sebring Van Nortwick, and he was a member of Co. "E", 75th NYVI. At the time the letter was written, he was on Santa Rosa Island, Florida (presumably at Ft. Pickens). He refers to the Rebs as "sand fleas", and (among other things) talks about how he has to go clean his gun as it had gotten "a bit rusty" while on guard duty.
